1 de " Friday and Saturday, the 22nd and THE BEMIDJI DATLY PIONE U e VOLUME 4. NUMBER 281 BEMIDJ1, MINNESOTA. FRIDAY EVENING, MARCH 22, 1907. KILLED BY THE CARS Walter Drummond, While Lying on M. & 1. Tracks Near Bridgie, Hit By Train. While lying on the M. & I. rail- way tracks, in a drunken stupor, utterly oblivious of his surround- ings and unaware of the extreme danger of his situation, Walter Drummond, a lumberjack. was struck by the south-bound freight train yesterday novn and received injuries from which he died within three hours. The scene of the accident was one mile south of Bridgie, and how Drummond came to choose so dangerous a place for sleep- ing quarters is inexplainable, ex- cept that he was much intoxi- cated and while trying to walk into or from Bridgie was over come by the effects of the liquor he had drank and went to sleep on the rails, The freight train, with David Phillips as conductor and F. D, Stillings as engineer, left Bridgie shortly after mnoon yesterday. While going over a raise in the tracks, a dark spot was noticed on the tracks ahead, which was thought to be cinders. However, Mr. Stillings rang the bell of the locomotive, but there were no signs that the mass of black on the rails was possessed of life, and it was impossible to discern that it was a human be- ing until within a few feet of the spot. The lever of the engine was reversed, and the train was dynamited, but not in time to avoid striking the obstruction on the track. The bydy was pushed along on tho rails by the pilot of the locomotive and se- verely jammed, and the side of the head crushed. The train was stopped and the body examined. In the pockets was found a card, bearing the name of Walter Drummond. Although badly crushed, Drummond was stillalive and he was at once taken to Funk- ley. He was unconscious and died shortly after arriving at Fuakley. MRS. GONGER'S GRAND SPRING MILLINERY OPENING 23d, All Day and Even- ings. NEw LocaTioN--Fourth street, two doors west of Owl Drug Store.
