b [ ! \ ROBBERS ENTER STORES AND - SECURE $1,000 IN GOODS Unknown Men Last Night Committed |, cusperson is nasdie tode. Robberies at 0’Leary & Bowser Store and Berman Emporiam. THIRD ATTEMPT FRUSTRAT- ED BY STORE EMPLOYEE. Robbers Make Successful Escape and Police Are Unable to Unravel . | the Mystery. Unknown robbers last night effected entrance to two stores in Bemidji, took goods valued at nearly $1,000 and made their escape, The establishments were the O’Leary & Bowser de- partmwent store on Third street robvad and the Berman Emporium, cor- ner Second street and Beltrami avenne, As yet the robbers have not ‘been located, aithough the police have made a vigorous effort to effect their capture, At the O’Leary store the amount of goods known to have been secured by the rob- bers is §544.50, itis quite that other and certain takeu. The loss at the Berman Em-; porium is approximately $450. The robbers gained eatrance to the O’Leary & Bowser estab- lishment by breaking a window leading to the basement at the rear end of the store, afterwards entering the basement and goiug! from there to the first tloor of the store, where the robbery was | committed, They gained entrance te the Berman Emporium by en- tering the bpasement from the outside, afterwards forcing the door leading from the basement; to the store above. The gouods taken at the O'Leary & Bowser store consist, so far as has been ascertained ub to the' present time, of two men’s fur, lined overcoats, two ladies’ fur coats, two suit cases and a large amount of silk cloth, the aggre- gate value being the amount above stated. At the Berman Emporium the | goods taken were silks valued at’ $300 and ladies’ fur valued at $150, The robbery is a complete mystery,'there being no way in which to ascertain the time it was committed or the identity of the perpetrators. The robbers were expert at the business, however, as is evident by their: selection of the goods which they carried away. Both the silks and furs taken were of the best quality, those of cheaper variety being left. The discovery ies was made this morniag by employes of the establishments We Still Have LAY The fur and sillk thieves who went through our store last night did" not take every thing from the shelves and they were kind enongh to leave one suit case contaia- ing $139.49 worth of choice silk, so will be able to sup- ply:your Xmas silk wants. O0’LEARY & BOWSER RISy, VoS 2 tall m- & Bowser; goods were| neckwear of the robber-’ robbed when they opened up the stores this morning., At both stores silks were strewn over the counters in disorder. At the O’Leary & Bowser store a| third suit case filled with silks, | | which the robbers evidently had !intended to take with them, was found, The robbers took all the ladies’ silk skirts at the Berman Ewmporium, but these were found | at the door leading down to the besement, and it is thought that the perpetrators were frightened whilein the @2t of committing the deed and ran away, fearing | detection, and in their haste dropped the bundle of skirts. The till was also broken into at | !the latter establishment, and a pair of broken scissors, which had eidently been used in open- ing the till, were found lying on ithe counter, The robbers se-: cured but 30 cents and a few pen- nies from the till, however, the money having been removed last night when the store was closed up. An attempt to rob a third; store is beleived to have been i made last night, when two un- known men attempted to gain rentrance to the E. H. Winter & Co. store at the corner of Bel trami avenue and Fourth street. Andrew Casperson, an em- ploye of the company who sleeps in the store at night, was writ ing a letter in the office of the establishmeny when he heard a/| noise at the front door of the! store. He looked out and saw two men, one of whom was try- ing to open the dcor. He waited } "the store to purchase goods, but| !the actions of the two men were | P BISIAR & VANDERLIP! ! the office, which 1s located at the |} .susp‘cmus and he stepped from rear end of the store, and, sneak- the south side of the grocery de- partment reached a point near @ the front window. He says the at-! |hempt to open the door of the i store was made between 9:30 and ' 10 o’clock. When examined this’ morning the door showed evi- dences of having been strained, ! portions of the lock being bent out of shape. It is believed thatthe men who attempted to gain entrance tojg;. the E.H. Winter & Co. lishment are the same as those who successfully carried out the! robberies at the other stores. From all indications the same men who robbed the O’Leary & Bowser store stole the goods from the Berman establishment. Entrance was gained in practical- ly the same manner at both buildings and the kind of goods| taken is identically the same.
