On Wednesday evening of this week Grand Rapids lodge No 184, I. Q. Q. F., celebrated and entertained their friends ina royal manner. It is estimated that about 150 people were present at Odd Fellows hall to giye expression to their feelings of joy over the final payment of all indebtedness against their building. A very de- lightful and appropriate program was carried out and a sumptuous spread was prepared and served by the jadies of the Episcopal guild. Grand Master Hugo of Duluth-was preseut, aud delivered an address on Odd Fel- lowship. The program was opened with musie by the Grand Rapids orches- tra, followed with a duet by Miss Dewey and Mr. Bolter. The orches- tra was again called upon to favor the audience with more detightful music. A_ selection by the High Scheol quartet was greatly appre- ciated. Grand Master Hugo’s address was an historical ‘review of the order and what its aims and objects are. His discourse was highly appreciated and left the feeling tbat Odd Fellow- shipisone of the great moral influ- ences gf the civilized world. Miss Dewey favored the members and their guests with a sulo, which was. followed witb an interesting address by Rey Mr. Walker on the local lodge and its progress since organization Inany years ago in the Beckfelt bal, in the days when that was the only place in town for the holding af growth and development of the order in Grand Rapids down to the present time. The last nvte on the hall bad been paid off some weeks ago, aod the final act in full sis- charge of all obligations was the burning of the note while all present stood in attendance at the ceremony. meetings of any kind. After feasting those so inclined enjoyed themselves at dancing while otbers played cards. REY, FR. CLEARY . DECEMBER 12. The Bev, Wather Cleary of Minne- apolis will deliyer a leeture at Vil- lage hall in Grand Rapids on Decem- ber 12, under the auspices of the local Lyceum bureau, This wili be the third of the series of attractions that are to be given during the winter, ‘The reverend gentleman lectured from the local platform a year ago andthe large audience was delighted with the intellectual treat afforded. Father Cleary is pre-eminently a lec- turer. His voice is melodious and well moulded, his words flow freely and are well chosea, his jestures.are few and his manner earnest but not impassioned, but his clear, convinc- ing argument is the great charm of his address, He at once demands and commands attention, and his audience is held and. carried with him, not only to the end of bis speak: ing, bytalso with impressions that can ueyer be effaced. THE SALE OF STATE LANDS Last manth extended comment was made in the columns of this journal relative to the sale of state lands in Minnesota, this season and next, to actual settlers on the installment payment basis, and a prediction was made that such nao would meet with success. The first sale of state land under the direction of the auditor's office Everything has Dropped -Away | Below the Real Value. > cee ereneneneneenmnenemnsasen ener Ge! has been completed 4nd the result¢ are most gratifying, bespeaking a good demand for the idle lands suit- able for farming purposes which have so long been tied up from the settlers, and a splendid revenue for the state. About 68,000 avres in the northern and western part of Minnesota, nete ting the state about $90,000 in ad- vance payments and insuring a future } revenue of about $500,000. The aver- age price netted for the Jaade was from $7.75 to $8 per acre, as against an appraised figure of $6 per acre. The most important feature about this sale is that practically all the land was sold to parties whose intent it is to locate on the tracts. ‘ means a substantial increase in tie next few years in Minnesota farms, hence extended agricultural* pros perity. Many persons already owa: ing farms adjacent to state lands sold are said to have materially in- creased their holdings, a movement which is also of import in forecasting an increased acreage to be put under cultivation. > Next spring the saje of state lands will be resumed, and, as before, the speculators will haye no chance, Let the good work go on.—Farmer, Du~ luth.
