First Game Developes That This Year's Team Will Be Stronger Than Last Year's. In what proved to be as inter- esting a game of base ball as was ever played on the local diamond, Bemidji yesterday afternoon de- feated Grand Rapids by a score of 7to2. While the crowd was quite large for the first game, it was evident from remarks passed before the game that most of the specmhox:s expected nothing bet- ter than a game of ome old cat and attended the exhibition simply to pass the time away. After the game started, how- ever, those who were inclined to be pessimistic soon changed their opinions. The locals took their outs first and LeGore was inthe box with Lewey Roy be- hind the bat. Tomorrow is a day set apart by law and by custom, wherein we are commanded to lay aside for the time being the usuval ayo- cations of life and to honor the memory of our fellows who gave their lives for the nation. That custom it is the valued privileze of the people of this country to follow. Inevery city and ham let, in every four corners in the land the soldiers who still tarry among us will deck the gaves of their comrades who have gone before and it is our great priv- ilege to put other things away for a day and to assist in honor- ing the soldier, both living and dead. Therefore are the people of Bemidji called-upon, with ab- solute assurance of their readi- est response, to observe in spirit and in truth the spirit of Memor- ial Day. Let the noise of labor, the hum of the mart and the cry of pleasure be stilled and let us gather together and do homage to the heroes we have lost and honor to those' who are with us. Given at Bemidji, Minnesota, under my hand, this 29th day of May, 1905. A. E. HENDERSON, Mayor. When the body is cleared for action, by Dr. King’s New Life Pills, you can tell it by the bloom of health on the cheeks; the brightness of the eyes; the firm- ness of the fiesh and muscle, the buoyancy of the mind. The second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings were played without allowing the ag- gregation from down the line to get one run, and at the begin- ning of the eighth inning the locals had seven tallies to théir credit. In the eighth, however, the Grand Rapids team succeed- ed in connecting with LeGore’s curves and with three men on bases a long drive to right field brought in two runs. The side was retired without any more runs being made and the ninth inning neither side scored. The score: BEMIDJI| ARE, AT WORK| Crew of Soo Engineers Sur- veying a Line in Vieinity of Nebish. AUTHORITY GIVES OPINION THAT ROAD WILL BE BUILT. Says That There Is No Doubt About Extension of Line to Duluth. That the Soo railway company intends to Yuild a line from Thief River Falls to Duluth is again im- pressed upon the minds of north- ern Minnesota residents by the fact that there is acrew of sur- veyors at work running a line eastward towards the head of the lakes. At the present time the engineers are working in the vi- cinity of Nebish, south of Red lake. M. D. Stoner, engineer for the Minneapolis, Red Lake & Mani- toba Railway company, and one of the bestauthorities on railroad matters in northern Minnesota, stated today that there was no doubt in his mind but that the Soo really intended to extend its line from Thief River Falls east- ward to Duluth. He was not prepared to quote any official of the Soo as stating that this was the case, or say that he had any inside information regarding the intentions of the company, but gave his opinion simply from per- sonal observations of what the company has already done in the way of railroad building through- out this section of the state. “If the line is built,” said Mr. Stoner, ‘it will be practically as good as another railway for Be midji. The competition between the Soo and the Great Northern will be keen and will no doubt lower both freight and passenger rates at every point where the two roads run paralled.” T Bemidji— Haz-n, 3b... A Happy Young Bride One of the happiest young women in town was married only a few months ago, but her troubles began when she tried to think what to get her husbind for a birthday present. Fortu- nately she consulted E. A. Barker our popular druggist and be suggested a box of Wadsworth Bros.’ “Chicos.” Mr. Younghusband congratu- lated his wife on her good judge- ment in selecting cigars, and says he will not smoke anything but ‘Chicos” in the future, not only because his wife gave them to him, but because they satisfy his fastidious taste exactly, and just meet the needs of his pocket- book. Wadsworth Bros.” “Chicos” are really a 10c cigar for 5c, as they are made with a long Havana filler, are good size, smoke free, and are a real cigar from the first puff up to the stub. E. A. Barker is the local agent and wants all lovers of good cigars to try the “Chicos.” Through Tourist Cars to Cal fornia.
