ROME. May 28.—Italian Government has re- ceived a dispatch from Chefu stating that the en-- gagement between the Russian and Japanese fleets was disastrous to both fleets. The losses twere frightful. Every Russian ship was damaged. TSINGTAU, May 29.—A telegram from Chinese sources says that in the naval battle in the Straits of Korea on Saturday and Sunday the Russians lost two battleships and two cruisers. This report has not been confirmed. i LONDON, May 29.—The correspondent of the Morning Post at Shanghai says that a telegram has been received there from Peking announcing that . Rojestvensky’s fleet has been defeated off the Tsu' Islands and is fleeing northward and that four Russian ships, including the battleship Borodino, have been sunk. The Tokio correspond ent of the Daily Mail says that the Russian fleet has been rsed, that several Russian ships have been bled and that the remainder are in flight, with the Japanese pursuing. 3 TRINGTAU, May 29.—There is a running na- val engagement between the Russian and Japa- nese fleets near. the island of Oki. It is reported that the whole Russian fleet is not participating, all the slower vessels having steamed around Ja- pan. The Japanese losses so far are stated to be one cruiser and -ten torpedo boats. -The Island of Oki is in the sea of Japan, about two hundred miles northeast of the Straits of Korea, where the battle between the Japanese and Russian fleets had its beginning. - * - WASHINGTON, May 28. — Japanese Minister Takahira, has received a dispatch from Tokio, say- ing in effect that the fizhting in the naval battle “thus far has been “favorable prospects to the ‘Japanese.
