THE Pioneer Journal is moved to censure the Pioneer for its statement that the primary law in its operation is disrupting parties, and deplores the Pio- neer’s statement on the ground that it is an attack on the prin- ciple of the law. We. have re- peatedly testified to our faith in the primary principle but this does not make us blind to the de- fects of the law. One of the gravest of these defects is that the law steadily tends to the erasiug of all party lines.” Can anyone who has observed the operation of the law doubt this fact? Who nominated the repub- lican candidates in Beltrami county? Republicans, demo- crats, socialists, prohibitionists, everybody. Who nominated the democratic candidates? Nobody, there were none. One party was completely blotted out while the other became the dumping ground of every shade of political belief. If this is not destroying party lines we shall have to ad- mit that we cannot spell annihila- tion. We firmly believe in the primary election but we would that it were materially bettered in several very important par- ticulars. EVERY citizen of Bemidji will congratulate himself over the outcome of the mayorality tangle. The Pioneer knows mnothing of Dr. Henderson'’s personal prefer- ences or political beliefs but it has abundant confidence in his good judgment and his single- ness of purpose to serve the city for the city’s best interests. His election as mayor by a unani- mous vote honors every member of the council, THE legislature of 1905 has ad- journed. Itis yet too earlv to judge of what it has accom- plished. The legislature does so much of its work in committee, work that does not get into the newspapers, that we are perhaps over zealous it of laziness. A month hence we shall have a truer appreciation of 1 accusing ’| the work of the session of 1905. HENRY BUENTHER Naturalist and Taxidermist » 208 Second St. Pastoffice Box No. 686 BEMIDJI, MINN.
