Mr. W. Calvin Chase read before the Epworth League of Ebenezer church on last Sunday afterternoon. The ‘‘Elements of Leadership” was the subject of an extremely interesting address by L. M. Hershaw, before the Congressional Lyceum last Sunday af- ternoon. A very large and intelligent audience was pot to hear him. Among other things the speaker said: that he was opposed to the idea that in industrial education rested the only hope for the negro’s progress, and he was not opposed to indnstrial ed- ucation, but believed that the race should be educated along all commer- cial, industrial literary and scinentific lines, just as the other races have done and are doing. At the conclusion of Mr. Hershaw’s able address, Lawyer J. H. Stewart, introduced a very important resolution in relation to the conspicuous absenc in the histories of this country of an: mention of the many deeds and patri- otism of negroes. The introduction ofthis resolution was greeted with prolonged applause, and on motion was promptly adopted. The following gentlemen made short speeches more or less in support of the position taken by the principal speaker: A. S. Richardson, E. Davis J]. H. Stewart, Foulks, Morton, Harris and Boston. Miss Bessie Hamilton of the Asbury M. E. chucrh seal was present and sang, ‘God is ove.” There was a large and appreciative audience present at Park Temple church on last Thursday evening. The occasion was the first muscal enter- tainment by the Girls’ Club, under the direction of Mrs. A. V. Chase. There are fully 30 young] misses connected with the club, from 8to 14 years of age, who meet every Monday evening at the church. The choruses by the entire club were rendered in an excel- lent manner. Miss Benting, Lucinda astically encored for the excellent manner in which~they fendered their numbers. Several youngsters from the Boy’s Club acted as ushers. The Mt. Horeb Baptist church Club, on last Monday evening, Rev. R. V. Payton, Pastor, gave a sociable at the residence of Mrs. Ida Brooker, 13th and D streets S. E., under the auspices of Mesdames Brooker, Fannie Terrill and Lavinia Toliver. The scenes of Mr. Joseph Arthur’s most successful play are laid in the suburbs of Rising Sun, which is situ- ated on the Ohio River, in what is known as the ‘‘Blue Jeans’ ‘‘dees- trickt.””. The play opens with the old village cobbler, Jacob Tutewiler work- ing at his bench, while his wife Cindy is bustling about preparing refresn- ments to be served during a_ political oration, which is to be delivered by Perry Bascom, a young and wealthy saw mill proprietor, who has settled in Rising Sun, the early home of his father, and is now candidate for Con- gress. Jacob Tutewiler mourns the loss of his daughter Lucy, who eloped with anuncle of Perry Bascom and died in the poor house, leaving a daughter, who next appears on tne scene as “‘June,’’ the poor-house waif, whom old Tutewiler adopts. Col. Risner is booming the campaign, and is mhaing a strong fight for election, but is defeated by Bascom’s falling a victim to the charms of Sue Eudaly known as the ‘Belle of Rising Sun,” an adventuress, whom he honestly but secretly marries, she abandoning her rural lover Ben Boone, who in revenge becomes his sucsessful political oppo- nent. Bascom soon discovers Sue has been married before, but there is no record of her husband’s death. Knowing that she has committed bigamy, he leaves her and marries June, but fool- ishly conceals his former alliance from her. Sue becomes insanely jealous and in seeking revenge finds a useful ally in Ben Boone, who is now Bascom’s en- gineer, whom she incites to kill Bas- com by saying: ‘He is the only one who stands between us.’”’ Ben, with the jealousy of a madman, awaits his opportunity, which comes one day at the mill when the hands have gone to vote. After a trial of Boone for attempted mnrdcr, acquitted by Perry’s testi- mony, to the effect that Ben acted in self-defense, he goes away insearch of Sue’s husband, Dick White. He is unsuccessful. Three years pass be- fore he returns to find himself a father and June the only one who still has faith in him. As the action of the play progresses, the village band, a male and female chorus of country folks, and a calf (to be servee up at a barbecue), are effect- ively introduced. ‘Established SR.
