Evades Her Parents, Goes to a Hotel and Takes Chioral. Canandaigua, N. Y., July 9.—A cham- bermaid at the Canandaigua Hotel found the dead body of Mary Daggett in a.room which she had engaged the night before. Miss Daggett was the youngest daughter of the Rev. Oliver Daggett. for many years pastor of the Congregational Church in this village. For some time past Miss Daggett had becn receiving treatment at the Clifton Springs Sanitarium for nervous affec- tions, and on Thursday evening she evaded her nurse and, taking the Le- high Valley train, went to Geneva. From thefe she went to Canandaigua. She then engaged a carriage to take her to the hotel, but on the way stop- ped at a drug store and procured two drachms of chloral on a prescription. She then went to the hotel, and to her room, it being the last time she was seen alive. ATE POISONOUS BERRIES. Two Children Die on a Train While Re- tnrning to Thier Home in Providence. Providence, July 9.—Two children, a boy and a girl, passengers on the 0 train from Summit.to Providence, died on the train of poisoning. They were the children of Richard March, a sil- versmith, living at No. 128 Jackson avenue, this city. Mr. Marsh, with his wife and children, left Providence on Tuesday to pass the Fourth at Sum- mit. he children, while waiting the arrival of the Providence train, wan- dered into the woods near the station and picked what they supposed were blackberries, but what it is believed were dogberries. MONROE MONUMENT: Brazil Will Do Honor to Our Coun- tryman. Rio Janeiro, July 9. — The torner- stone of the Monroe monument will be laid September 5. A bill has been pre- sented to Congress creating an inter- national debt of $15,000,000 to cover the treasury deficit. An increase of important duties is proposed to meet the new obligation. Brazilian insur- gents are invading Rio Grande Do Sul from all sides. Villians Near Poughkeepsie. - Poughkeepsie, N. Y., July 9. — Near Rhinebeck a tramp committed an as- sault on Mrs. Jacob Lang, while her husband was at work in the field. Mrs. Lang is in a delicate condition. <A short distance from the scene of this outrage another tramp attempted an assault on a young lady, but the at- tempt was not successful. The as- saulters created great excitement and officers are in pursuit. Eva Ray Gives Up. New York, July Eva L. Mann, who figured as the wife of Robert Ray Hamilton, has given a quit claim deed to Edmund L. Baylies and Gilbert M. Spier, representing the Hamilton es- tate, yielding all her rights to the es- tate for the sum of $10,000. The deed eontains a clause by which Eva L. Mann agrees not to prosecute any ap- peal or assert any claim as the widow of the late Robert R Hamilton. Cruiser Minneapolis's Kace Against Time. Marseilles, June 29.—Owing to con- flicts between the workmen on the drainage system, a majority being for- eigners, the Prefecture has suspended all further work. Two thousand are idle. June 29. — Freder FEmich, aged fifteen, who fled panie stricken from a storekeeper whose an- ger he and two other boys had pro- voked last evening, was found dead this morning in a neighboring cellar, where ‘he had hidden. Excitement and fright caused heart disease. Avenging a Tough. Newark, N. J., July 2.—Policeman Smith, who, it is alleged, fatally club- bed John Curley, the newsdealer of Adams street, who was found dead in a cell on Saturday morning, was at- tacked by gang of roughs.
