Shots were ex- changed, but no one was injured. The negroes went back to the coke works, where plans were made to raid the town. The 150 negroes at the Paynter works armed themselves with revol- vers, Tazors and clubs, and at 8 o'clock marched to town. Burgess John Rob- €rison appeared on the scene and com- manded the mob to disperse. A negro fired three shots at him and another struck him with a stone. This was a signal for a battle, and a crowd of at least 500 citizens rushed at the ne- Rroes. The negroes retreated, shoot- ing back into the crowd, and at least 500 shots were fired. The citizens se- cured revolvers and guns and chased the hegroes up through Pastime Park, keeping up a hot fire. The negroes escaped through the woods to the works. David Munday. a colored man from Pittsburg, was left behind prob- ably fatally wounded, being shot in the head. It is reported that at least @ dozen other negroes were woundel. Y., July 10.—EBleanor Markham, aged Senta tern apparent- ly died Saturday at her home near Currytown. While the supposed corpse was being borne from the house to the hearse, a faint tapping attracted the attention of the pall-bearers, and upon the coffin lid being raised Miss Markham was found to be alive. She was removed to her home and is re- covering. Miss Markham said that | she had knowledge of all that passed while the preparations were making | for her burial, but she was unable io } give sign until the fear of burial arous-} ed her to action. ' —S81- ADRIFT AT SEA. Two Men ina Dory Without Food or Water for Seven Days. St. John’s, N. KF, July 10.—The Schooner Diamond, Capt. Boudoit, eight days out from Boston, arrived here last evening, bringing two sea- men, William Mason and Theodore Wilnough, of the Gloucester schooner Shenandoah. The men were picked up on Friday. They had been drift- ing in a dory off Grand Banks for seven days, without food or water, and tell a dreadful story of their suf- ferings. They chewed the leather of their boots, pieces of canvas and every- thing that might stimulate and nour- ish them. Cannibals Still in Fiji. Auckland, July 10.—A vessel which arrived here from the F terday says that the natives of Vanu Levu recently attacked the native po- lice, who were enforcing communal taxes, clubbed all and ate several of them. Sir John Thurston, Governor ot the islands, led the troops against the insurgents and, after killing seven of them in a fight, forced them to sub- mit. Killed in a Freight Wreck. Binghamton, July 10.—A freight train on the Erie road in charge of Con- ductor Munn, of Hornellsville, broke in two between Campville and Owego and came together again with a great crash, piling up a number of cars. Conductor Munn w thrown under the pile of wr ed cars and instantly killed. He is survived by a widow and three children. Mint Settlement Delayed. Washington, July 10.—Director Pres- ton has di ed the Superintendent of ihe Mint at San Francisco to resume operations and defer settlement of his counts until later. It is customary ettle on June 30, but the two clerks sent from Washington for that pur- pose. Messrs. Butler and Braddock, have been tied up at Ogden, Utah, for ten days by the strike. Boston, July 10.—The Supreme Court has under consideration an application made by the Attorney-General for an nection to stop the business of the Sugar Trust for not complying with the Massachusetts law requiring it to file in March each year a certificate of its financial condition.
