Spring Bolt. A novel safety lock has been invent- ed by a Swedish engineer, says the Louisville Courier-Journal. Wishing to close an isolated cottage situated in a forest, he suspended behind the door a pendulum, whose bob was hollow on one side and bevelled at the other. In a position of equilibrium, the hol- low part is situated in front of the aperature of a curved channel that de- | bouches behind the door. 1f a person blows into the aperature the pendulum | will begin to swing, but, whatever the force of the breath, the amplitude will be very slight. If, at the moment the pendulum is passing through the posi- tion of equilibrium, after a complete oscillation, one blows again, the oscil- lation will become pronounced. After this has been repeated several times, there will be finally communicated to the pendulum an amplitude such that the bob will abut against a lever, so placed that a slight movement will bring it into unstable equilibrium, and it will fall upon a spring bolt, and the door will open. But if the duration of the oscillation of the pendulum (which is absolutely invisible) were unknown, one might keep on blowing for a week without reaching any result. The lock is so arranged that with a little prac- tice the door can be unlocked at the fourth oscillation. If a person knowing the system but not the period wished to unlock the door and was deceived by an eighth in the duration of the interior pendulum’s oscillation, the fourth blowing would produce an effect exactly contrary te the first and the pendulum would stop. The two intermediate blowing: would have produced no effect. For an error of a sixteenth, the fourth blowing would arrive at the moment at which the pendulum was at the end of its travel, and the effect would be null. The principle utilized in this lock is the same as that involved in bell ring- ing. Bell ringers, causing a minimum force to act at a given moment, set in motion and ring the largest bells.
