U PRACT neon & Co., Box 5 —_——— 1S EXPLORER VERHOEFF ALIVE? Belief That the Mineralogist of the Peary Expedition is Not Dead. A dispatch from Wilmington, Del., | gives an interview with Miss Verhoef, sister of the young man who went to Greenland with the Peary expedition, and about whose fate there seems to be such a diversity of opinion. She believes her brother to be alive. She will demand that an expedition be sent to Greenland in search of him. Other scientific friends of Verhoeff believe he has intentionally staid in the Arctic regions to prosecute explorations on his own hook. Dr. Hughes, who knew Verhoeff well while out with the West Greenland expedition, is thoroughly convinced that the young man is still alive, and may yet return to civilization a greater man than Peary. The doctor is of the belief that, being piqued at Peary’s action in not selecting him as a companion on the trip north, Verhoeff decided to remain with the Es- kimos, cultivate their habits and modes of living, and induce them to accompany him on his voyage of discovery. With such allies, he would be better able to cope with the dangers and privations of such au undertaking, and may yet return with the record of having surpassed Peary, Greely, Brainerd, or any previous explorer, CHINESE REGISTRATION. The Powerfal Six Companies Will Fight the Geary Law. The edict of the famous Six Companies of San Francisco that Chinamen in the United States must not obey the act of Congress requiring them to register, is likely to afford a test of the authority of those organizations over their country- men. It is based not on a spirit of deti ance to the government, but on the be lief that the act is unconstitutional. T ‘3a matter that the Six Companies will sest in the courts as soon as possible, and meanwhile they propose to nullify its execution by calling upon the Chinese everywhere not to register. Yet should the courts pronounce the act constitu tional the unregistered might be left in a bad fix, because the penalty of nonregi: tration within the statute period is ex- pulsion from the country, A good many Chinese who do not like the race dis: criminations made against them in the laws of the land would nevertheless tather submit to them than be expelled Bandit Outrages in Sicily. Reports from Palermo state that the Island of Sicily is overrun with bandits The bandits are not molested by the gov ernment. Wealthy men have been car- rled off and held for ransom. and peas ants suspected to have informed on them have been murdered or tortured. A band, led by Samauw, has committed many murders characterized by the greatest cruelty. Even children have not escaped the members of this gang of thieves and murderers. They have be headed little boys and girls, cvt their bodies in halves and then thrown the mutilated remains about the country for dogs and hogs to eat. Both the English and American consuls have verified these outrages, No More Grain Reports. The elevator companies at Minneapo lis have decided to withhold reports o! 3tozks of grain on hand from Bradstreet’: and othercommercial periodicals. The manager of one of the companies said tc a Bradstreet reporter; “The furnishing of stocks of wheat by your concern ané also by the government reports is in < great measure responsible for the terri ble depression of our markets. Russis keeps all such information to herself anc we believe it would make a difference o! many millions of dollars to this coun ty were -ve to adopt the same policy.’ Infernal Machine for Gov.
