Press, ae __ A Word for Motherssin-Law— Au asylum for mothers-in-law 1s being built in Austria, by wealthy Austrian woman, and provision has been made for five hundred occupants. This item will afford an opportunity for many a hawor- ous paragraph, but there are plen- ty of true men and women in America, at least, who will gladly testify that there is ample space for mothers-in-law out side of the asylum. Who paid the son-in law’s debts, and started him in successful business, intead of let- ting him sink to the level of his dissipated companions? Who pays a generous half of the wife’s expenses and supplements the scanty larder from ber own stores? Who takes all the children home when there are sickness in family and never mention her own discom- fort and selfssacrifiiees? Who is always ready in case of disaster and calamity, sickness, disappoint- ment, or disgrace, to sustain and comfort, and who bears meekly the public reproach of her title, be- cause of the few meddlesome, scan- dal-loving, selfish mothers of mar- ried children? And who meekly endures the slights and the per- haps thoughtless but none the less unkind words of the family which quickly forgets benefits received and plans with more or less open- ness how to get rid of ber presence?
