hes Sau ra Pade Hes te A BIG HOTEL FAILS. At Last the Hebrews Can Laugh at the | Stewart Heirs. : J. G. B. Woolworth, the manager of the Grand Union Hotel, at Saratoga, N. Y., has made an assignment for $25,000. Several years ago the management of the Grand Union Hotel, at Saratoga, owned by the Stewart estate, under the lirection of Judge Henry Hilton, aston- ‘shed the world by announcing that no Hebrew guests would be entertained. Disaster was then predicted as the out- come, but with Stewart’s millions behind the house the public gradually lost sight of this remarkable departure, i nally came to be generally bel «ny man who ran that magnificent es- tablishment would be backed by the heire of the Stewart estate, and that it would be an impossibility for him to fail. The Grand Union has always been a sort of white elephant of the Stewart es- tate. Under the latest arrangement made oy Judge Hilton with the Stewart heirs, Judge Hilton’s interest in the hotel has veen transferred to them, and Prescott ‘Hall Butler has represented the heirs. { The heirs of the Stewart estate, it 1 j:aid, not content with the enormous rent £ $50,000 paid by Woolworth, placed a lause in the lease by which they were to are the profits of Woolworth to the ex- nt of 50 per cent. This is very good »ws for the creditors of Woolworth. It » a well known principle of law that one can not take profits without sharing losses, The amazement of the heirs is very great. PRANKS OF ELECTRICITY. A Salem Meat Market Becomés an Elece tric Battery. A dispatch from Salem, Mass., states that electricity played some queer pranks at Porter's meat market this week. Dur- , ing the rain storm a wet towel hanging on a clothesline on the market roof blew onto an electric light wire below and wound around it. The electricity passed through the towel and shot down into the ground, where it came in contact with water pipes leading into the build- ing. Along these pipes it scampered. The first thing it met in the basement was a pot of lard, which was boiling on the stove. This it illuminated. The young man in charge thought the lard must be burning, and attempted to remove the pot from the stove, where- apon he received a shock that landed him against the basement wall. Pale with fright he rushed upstairs, where a } fellow workman, noting his blanched ap- pearance, reached for the water faucet to get a glass of water. No sooner had the workman touched the faucet than he had occasion to pick himself up from a far corner of the room. } For afew moments everything seemed } turned into an electric battery. The { uails in the wall became red hot, and electricity flew from the water pipes and flashed around the iron bands on water pails. At last the cause of the trouble was ascertained and the towel removed. : FOUR DEAD, ONE A MANIAC.
