The President was received with great enthusiasm wherever he went. It is evident that his administra- tion meets the approval of the en- tire country. Iam giad that this much abused man is endorsed by the people. +e Ohio has started a republican pa- per called the Standard, it is the only republican Paper in the State and from all indications it will be supported by the entire republican party. ‘The republicans of Ohio need a first-class journal and such @ paper has been started. The first Issue made its appearance on last Saturday and the Ohioans in this city received it with delight, *,* Speaker Reed will make every effort to carry the next House of & | Representatives and should he suc- ceed, he will be reaching for some- thing higher. Mr. Reed is not the man to hesitate in doing any hon- orable act and, as his ambition is on the onward march, there is no telling where he will stop. *%* * If Major McKinley is elected, he will also aspire for higher honors. If he should be defeated, the Ohio peopie will nominate him for Gov- ernor. Reed and McKinley they say, will make a strong team. ae The Washington politicians have commenced to boom their favorite candidates for the next national republican convention. Some of them are of the opinion that money 18 plentiful, and that the ambitious Candidates are easy to bleed. It will be about three years before another President is elected, but what effect does that have on Washington politicians? No man, or set of men can pledge any delegation to any one. While there may be some dissatisfaction among the local politicians, there will be a unanimous verdict reach- ed onthe men whom the bosses want to represent the republicans in the next convention. So far, there are at least ten candidates. Two will be chosen and the others left. * The Emancipation Celebration in Richmond, Virginia, was one of the greatest events in the history of the Virginia peopte. The demon- Stration was large and enthusias- tic. The Chief Marshal, of the cel- ebration, was Editor John Mitch- ell, Jr. Mr. Mitchell looked as if he was governor of Virginia. Kdi- tor Mitchell was King this week. *,* In the deaths of Justice Miller and General Belnap, the country looses two distinguished men. Their deaths came sudden no one will deny ; that it was a shock to the civilized world, we all must ad- mit. SPECIAL NOTICES. A niece furnished room 450 N Street, n. w. 8. 27,1 m.
