The Negro as a politician in this country is counted a fraud, scoun- drel, and everything that is low aud mean, while the white politi- cians is considered the essence of all that is progressive and produc- tive of good government. Men who have led the Nation into blood and war are counted its greatest sens among the Anglo-Americans, while the Anglo African who saved the country by taking up a citizenship that was once denied him by these same leaders, is said to be an in trader. Someof the race who are not satisfied with the treatment they receive are saying, ‘Let us leave politics alone.” Every one of them. should say, “Whatever white men may have, as a Negro I mean to have.” * * * * Some one must follow while oth- ers lead, and it is evident that lead ers are needed in every ward, city, county and state in the United States. Many of us are not willing to follow the leadership ot Bruce, Douglass or Lynch, because we be- lieve them to be office seekers. Why not? The office gives power and influence.
