Portland Oregon, Aug. 19th, ’90. Editor of the Bee: In reading an Eastern paper I noticed an item from Hon. J. Mil-~ ton Turner, relative to emigration of colored people to Mexico for the purpose of raising coffee on land belonging te a company of white men. Why not come to the West, say Washington, or Oragon, where there are hundreds of tiiou~ sands of acres of fine land well tim- bered with very valuable lumber, which can be bought cheap, and other lands that can be taken up «as timber claims and land claims iv those two States? The land is very black and rich; the fruits are much finer than any in the Eastern States. ‘this coun- try is filling up with foreigners ; some of whom have grown very wealthy. The climate is very heal- thy. laman Eastern man andI am surprised to find such a mild climate. The winters are not as cold as those are in Washiugton, D.C. THE WAGES are very good; aman can raise more on ten acres of land here than he can in the East on forty acres. Saw mills are numsrons and houses can be built very cheap in? Portland. The Chinamen supply the hotels witb all the fruits, vege- tables, &c,, which taey raise them- selves and seli at a good price. The colored people are very scarce and what few are here own their own houses and some are quite wealthy. The white people prefer good eol- ored people, if they could get them instead of foreigners for servants. Cooks receive trom 25 to 30 dol- lars per month. The hotels wave all colored waiters and bellmen from Chicago and Georgia. Let the colored people come out west this is the place. Very respectfully, &e., F.
