Under the new arrangements for entertainments ot the old Capital City Guard with Major Revells as chairman of the executive commit- tee, the officers and men are deter- mined to give their friends a good time. Don’t forget the picnic of the Capital City Guard at Vanness park on Thursday 4th of Septem~ ber. Tickets sold at the gate only. ee RIDE HIM ON A RAIL. IS HE INSANE? A MOCCASIN THAT IS DISTURBING THE OHIO PE 'PLE, Cleveland, O., Aug. 28th, ’90. To the Editor: If editor Cooper’s cartoon artist would come over to Cleveland sometime, he would find bere an intestiny subject for his pen; this subject has all the necessary re- quirements to make a good car- toon. I believe Cooper coald sell more Freeman’s of that issue than ever before. This subject can be found in the person (?) of H. 0. Smith, or, to be more exact, Hod Carrier Smith, Ex(aggerator) Dep- uty Oil Inspector, composer of **Be true red eyes,” water carrier for a brass band here; a refused appli- cant of the Cleveland Press Club, and a subject of general debility all around. He ought to ‘‘take a tum- ble and “come off the porch.” He has lost all favor with the Cleve- land people. They are getting tired of bim. Ohio don’t want such men. He blasphemes, blackguards and tramples upon our oldest and most highly respected citizens. He isa hindrance to the success of our young men. He tears down instead of building up our societies. And the people outside of Cleveland, if they know not all ready, are be- coming cognizant of these facts and are gradually “letting him drop.” He is in disfavor with the Republican party and itis grada- ally “giving him the shake.” The Democratic party does not want him. It would’nt tolerate him. The Prohibition party is bis last resort. The Press club refused his admission. The pastors of the sev- eral churches here haye ‘soured’’ oa him. He ridicules the hotel waiter, the railroad porter, the jan itor and the like, because their positions are not so ‘“‘honorable” as that of Ex-Deputy Oil Inspector or Editor. He envies the young man who aspires and who holds good positions. He is aregular disturb- er of public peace and prosperity here in Cleveland. The very fact that he attempts to pull down the reputation of R.A. Jones in this State is ‘prima-face’ evidence that Mr. Jones will become the most popular man in the State, It has worked this way iu the case of those whom he has pounced upon. it is trae in the ease of Bruce, Langston, Lyneh, Douglass, Mc~ Cabe and a host in this city as: Hon. John P. Green, Hon. Jere A. Brown, and it naturally follows that it will be the case with Mr. Jones. Allow me toask the very many reaters of this paper—what shall | the people of Ohio do with sach a character? Shall we ever support him for office? Shall we ever peti tion for bis appointment to any prominent position? I hear a thou- sand voices of Negroes in this country saying NO. you in his paper that he is for the race, yes, he is for Smith first, la: t| and always and be is for Smith by attempting to put his feet upon others. The people of Obio are to intelligent to suffer this longer. The people cf Cleveland stand back and ridicule his boyish con- tortions and attribute them to his peculiar mental state which is fre- quently brought on by certain lanar relations with his brain.
