Fy * POLITICS IN BALTIMORE. DR. H J. BROWN, COLORED REPUBLI- CAN REMOVED. MORE CHANGES EXPECTED. WHAT COLORED MEN HOPE FOR. (From our regalar correspondent.) Baltimore, Md., June 17, 86. Whit Sunday being a day set a pait by the B-shops of the Metho- dist churches, as “Children’s day” was Sgenerally obeerved as such throughout the city, end the churcues were given up almost exclusively to the little foiks. They attested their appreciation of the compliment by completely burying the pulpits and altars “neath “buds and garlands gay.” Special se § mons appropriate to the day of Penteco:t were preached by the ministers and the day was s;eut here in religious circies as one of rejoicing. On Whit Monday, commonly known as holiday we were visited by a most terrible rain storm, which spoiled the fun of many lawn and picuic partics and park sociables. It wus a repetition of the 30th ot May, much to the re~ gret of the many working people who had set the occasion apart as one of refreshment and rest. The commencement exe. cises of St. Mary’s Parochial scliool took place on last ‘Thured y afternoon. ‘This school is conducied under the suspices of the Ejiscopal church, which has been doing a work a-~ mong the colored people similar 10 that generally doue by the Catholic churzhes 1n all communi- ties. When one sees the work done for the 1ace by these two de nominations, it cannot be hard for him to conclude that they are yet destined to become the religivus homes of the colored people im A- merica, for the fatherhood of God aud brotherhood of man are 1ecog nized by them us by no vther 1e- ligious sect. The Gallilean Fishe: men one of the largest and most popular seciet organizations here, will hold their @aunual fish passover ut Harper's Ferry on the 22d inst. Te o:ation subject, “Reasous why we are Gal- hileans” wiil be delivered by Mr. bomas I. Hall who s ands at the head of the order in the United States. ‘This society bas a lage brick hall, owned and contruiled by them in the central patt of tre city, and they are fast demons'rat- ing what may be accomplished by the race by co-operat.en atd prop- erly organized effort. Dr. H. J. Brown, one of the most prominent colored 1epubli- cans in this state has been succeed- ed by John G. Wright, a wiite gentieman, as U. S. stere keeper at the Custom House. If the at- titude of the administration at Washington is similar to that of the customs officials here, the changes among colvred office hoid- ere is certainly a one sided affair, all gomg out and none going in. Of the several colored mail carri- ers recently in the <ervice, only one remains, and I saw him this morning walking very lame and koking very weak, as thongh the thread of bis official existence had HORACE GLARK Firstclass Board.
