For more than two \ears an or- ganization known as the Indusiri- al Institute has been doing a gol work in this city by securing means and affording upportunities for needy boys und girls to learn something ot practical every day work. From a small beginuing the ladies of this organizati.n have persisted in their efforts, un tiltLey uow maintain a sewing school at Lincoln Mission, cor. 11; and R sts., and one at Shilvh hall on L st; they also support a ciass of girls at the schooi of Cookery on H st. and a class of b -ys in the Industrial Depariment at Uoward U iversity. They have been large- ly dependent upon thir own efs torts tor the means neve sa‘y to do this work. Though a few friends have contributed quite generously. Hon. Fred. Douglass re eutly gave $10., Mr. J Osborne Uunter hus sent contribu ious, while others have expressed a warm lutercst in the work. Mrs. B. K Bruce is president of the organization, Mrs. J.-hn F. C sok, treasurer, aud other well known ladi s ure among the officers. A bazaar on quite an ex eusive plan is proposed fur the com ng fall, as the ladies are anxious to extend ihe cope of their work. The clos- ing exercis.s of the sewing scloul at Shiloh hall will occur next Tues- day June 22d fiom 6 to 9p. m. A week luter the school situated at Linco'n Miss‘ou will hold its closing exercises, JERRY’S OWLS. One of the many jovial men in this city is Jerry Robinson, at 907 llih st.n. w. Jerry keeps a first cass plece where ladies and gen- tlemen need no’ have any hesitan- cy in going. Jerry has two pet owls, and he says that he can make these owls, if not talk, think of the deviis’ prayer. What that prayer is no one knows but Jerry and his owls, ‘These owls are fed on spring chicken, and they can de- stroy more spring chickens in five minutes than Jerry can spit out yarns concerning them. A few minutes talk with Jerry will con- vince the most profound hypocrite that Jerry.docen’t belong t» church and that his owls know as much of the hereafter as he does. A few days ago, Jeriy said to a Beg scribe that he had just re eived a dia- mond pin from his sweet heart, and before he explained about the up, three well dressed ladies en- tered his saloon parlors up stairs and culled for three plates of Fus- sell’s cream. Before he had ‘put the cream on the table he com menced to explain to them the his- tory of his owls, just as one of the ladies was about to show him a card of a man talked to death, severul gentlemen down stairs got into a di-cussion about those owls which attracted his attention, who excused himself and was soon found in their midst aud to pre- vent Jerry from telling any more yarns about the owls, they all called for mint julips soft shell and deviled crabs. Go and sce the owls at Jerry’s Place, 907 11 st., n. W. CLARA TO LOUISE. The most important event of the week has been the presidents’ state reception. Indeed, it was one of the largest in the history of recep- tions. atthe Executive Mansion. Mrs. Cleveland was _the very pict- ure of beauty. The ladies who as sisted were handsomely attired in dresses very becoming to them. A list of names of members of the original ORPHEUS GLEE CLUB has been handed to me by the man- aging editor. I would rather had you to have finished your comment on this affair, as the Household is very anxious to know all of the particulars. Perhaps I am in pos- session of certain facts that may be interesting to you and those who desire to see the success of the or- ganization. I take this view ot the matter, which is quite similar to jyours. The original OrpheugGlee club disbanded, after the officers had wiihdrawn or left the club. No re-organization was affected, un- til it was rumored that there was to be organized an Orpheus Musi- cal and Social club; then several gentiemen who were connected with the old Orpheus Glee club perfect- ed areorgauization, by electing; Messrs J. T, Laytov, president, C. A. Beal, vice pres., A. K. Brodie, Secty., J. C. Nalle, Treas., aud W. A. Stewart, Liberian. A circular was issued by these gentlewen and sent tothe honorary members who were previously connected with the original Orpheus Glee club, re- questing them to state, whether) their names were used by the Or- j pheus Musical club with their aa- thority or whether they were still members of the original Orpheus. This circular has made several of the honorary members angry who say that they have a right to belong to as many social aud musical clubs as they fvel lisposed, and call their circular impudent. The same gentle- men who are honorary members of the Orpheus Musical club belong to the orignal Orpheus also. I have been informed that several gentle- men, who are honorary members of the original Orpheus, whose names appear on the list before me, say that they are no longer honorary members of the original Orpheus. Their excursion will take place in September and there is no doubt of a success. The excursion of the Orpheus Social and Musical club will take place next Friday. You better be at the boat in time, as it will be the largest .and most select ‘excursion that has ever been given for the benefit of the HOME CIRCLE. Let me hear from you soon. Trnly yours, Clara.
