Rut now the objectionable features of the bill have been weeded out, it is understood to be acceptable to the Governor, and since the necessity of the measure has become more obvious within the last year, we see no reason to doubt that the Underground Railway will ere long be an established institution of the city, The only argu- tment of any pertinency that has been adduced in opposition to this plan, is based upen the report of Engineer Cuaven, of the Croton Board, wherein the opinion is given that the water supply of the clty would be greatly endangered by the proposed road. We think, however, that as the Cro- ton mains are very neer the surface, the tunnel might be constructed low enough to entirely avoid contact with them ; but even if this be impracticable it would seem that engineer- ing skill ought to be able to overcome ¢o small an obstacle, In fact wo have experience to prove that Mr, Caaven's fear is groundiess, Io London and Paris underground railways have been con- structed without derangement of the water supply, and certainly “Yankee” ingenulty ought to be worth as much as the English or French article. We bave nothing to say in opposition to the vari- ous plans for an elevated railway, except that they are all experimental, and that in view of the urgent necessity of steam communication between the extremities of the island, we think ist better to adopt the plan sbout the practicability of which there is the least doubt, Letus have the Under- ground Railway, whose practicability has been demonstrated, and then if capitalists desire to ex- periment upon wrial plans, let them have an op- portunity to do eo, Fimanetal News, Markem, &e. Ibis sleo evident from these tigures that if the Prosi- dent's influence be felt at all in the election to-day the Democrats ought to achieves victory; while en the other band, if the Radicals triumph, the fact may be regarded as evidence that no rupture of the Republican party has in reality occurred, Gathoring Clouds—Trembling *peculators, It is strange how inflexibly Time insists upoo phe settlement of his accounts with the spoculators, The speculators in gold, stocks, coal, dry goods, eic., all reaped « rich harvest while the war was iv progress; but finally Time brought about a change, and the rapidly ecquired fortunes of the speculs- gore have for some months past been fast s!ipping shrough their fingers, The petroleum speculation was one of the most pernicious in the whole serica, for ithad apparently » substantial basis, and was Qherefore well calculated to deceive aud mislead honest and unsuspecting people. There were, and are sill, afew reliable Companies and somereally valuable oj] wells; but for every one of that @ort there were Gfty of the borus kind, being 4m reality nothing better than wholesale swin lle, Well, Time now seems to be settling up with the pe- Groleum speculation. Several banks in the oil region Dave recontly suspended, oil stocks have started pon a down-grade, oi! lands have dropped sev- Oral pegs in price, and the whole region of Oildom seems to be on the verge of « general panic. The Dighly-colored petroleum bubble, which was so wonderfully inflated by speculation, appears to be im some danger of a collapse, Woe should be sorry @0 see bonest people lose their money by the petro- Seum collapse—although if al) such had taken the oft-repeated advice of the Sum they would not now Be in danger—but as for the speculators, there is Ro ground for pity. There is « dark side to Shoddy and Petroleum, as in nearly evory other phase of life, a8 Time is now very clearly showing, LOST AND FOUND.
