Ditrichstein © matter how much you may think of yourself, you can’t help liking immensely—that is, if you have any sense of humor—Ben Hecht’s keenly clever comedy, “The Bgotist,” in which Leo Ditrichstein is better off at the 39th Street Theatre than he has been since “The Concert.” Here, as the happy surprise of a4 crowded week, is an uncommonly bright play, always saved by intelli- ice from seeming flashy. Howl the author may at what ho might consider a reflection on his origi- nality, it is only fair to say that his mordant humor has something of Moliere in it. Hecht is discerning malicious, cruel, yet delightfully amusing. Moreover, with all the so- phistication of assumed philandering, he gives way in the end to the breath- less tmnocence of a masqueradihg devil. In fact, he neatiy takes the wind out of Molnar and other Eu- ropeans who think they know all about life as it is lived irregularly He betrays stupidity only when he explains his characters in the pro- gram, for these characters need no explanation. Being a playwright, the egotist naturally enough dramatizes himself. He delights especially to indulge in this weakness with women, as his ‘wife well knows. The fact that she Suspects more than is good for her ts another matter. It is the fellow's vanity that leads him to the apart- ment of an actress given to extrava- gant praise. She plans to keep him for breakfast, but the Oriental junk tn her place, the joss sticks she burns and, finally, her bare-legged dance drive him to the street by way of the fire escape. ‘This is good burlesque, not of the Playwright, but of the actress, whose bad taste is more than her sensitive guest can endure. It is made exceed- ingly funny by the visitor's polite ef- forts to appear comfortable as he “squats on cushions and otherwise tries to accustom himself to his wejrd surroundings. The unhappy chap goes home only to be made more unhappy still by the discovery that his wife has done in fact what he has been doihg only in fancy. Before he can scarcely realize it, the shoe is on the other foot, but he stands up like a man and gtves his wife her freedom. ‘There ts no non- sense about it, merely a few wasted tears when the woman learns that her husband has never done anything worse than carry on flirtations in words, He admits he has burned a bonfire of words, but points out there Screenings By DON ALLEN POME.
