By Ed Van Every. Midget Smith fought and lost a hard twelve-round bout to Johnny Curtin at the Fourth Regiment Armory of Jersey City. For his gameness in going through with this fight Midget Smith has been rewarded with a chance at the bantamweight crown worn by Joe Lynch, the title holder. It was decided at an early hour to-day that the Lynch-Smith bout sched- uled for Madison Square Garden this Friday night, and which was called off yesterday afternoon, will be gone through with as originally ar- ranged. —_o— o Last night's fight in Jersey City between Curtin and Smith was a rare testimonial in support of the fact that the boxing game to-day has advanced beyond the stage of mere politics and individual dictatorship. NEWARK, N. J., Dec. 19.—Making his first appearance in the ring since he won the world’s welterweight title from Jack Britton in Madison Square Garden recently, Mickey Walker, the Elizabeth “Thunderbolt,” earned a victory over Philly Krug, @ middleweight of Harri- son, here last night in the local armory in a twelve-round bout before a crowd of 8,000 fans, While Walker was the victor, show- ing to the front decisively in the final rounds of the contest, his victory was hot one that might be called decisive, The champion was forced to battle under a handicap of height, weight and reach, but after he got down to work he soon brought Krug down to his size. Early in the fight Walker cut a gash under Krug’s left eye and fn the final round almost closed Krug’s right eye with a solid smash. During a mtx-up in the tenth round Krug went down. There seemed to be a difference of opin- lon as to whether he was knocked down or slipped. Krug weighed 154 pounds and Walker 14814. Jack Britton was given an ovation when introduced. It was a good bout to watch, with action every minute, as usually is the case when Mickey Walker steps into the ring.
