GIMBEL-BROTHERS 32ND STREET — BROADWAY — 33RD _ REET — NEWYORK CITY Whether, as is somtimes said, the imports of the G'mbel Stores exceed in volume the importsof any other American retailer, is not what we must con- sider here. It is not of primary importance. Not how much we import, but how advantageously, is what makes this a better store; is what makes for your profit—and ours. For, mark you ‘well, the import branch of a great retail business is in no sense a gesture. Qur promo- tion of jt at this time is neither in the nature of a flurry nor of a flourish. Its existence is due, not to whim, nor to caprice, nor to temperamentalism. The Gimbel Department of Imports is a vital and in- dispensable factor in the successful merchandising of this world store. Romance there is in it, to be sure. Romance and glamour, if you will. These things are by the way. They are as the lone candle lighting dimly the eathe- dral’s transept. But the brilliant and glorious halo that the store’s imports bring to the store are to be measured chiefly in terms of the great and important savings that they bring to you. Made-in-America goods are the backbone of the Gim- bel business. The Sales of the Gimbel Stores will aggregate well over seventy millions of dollars this year. Our direct imports from foreign countries will hardly exceed ten millions, so that approximately six-sevenths of the goods we sell are American made. But ten millions, at retail, is not an inconsiderable sum. Ten million dollars’ worth of new and desirable foreign merchandise, falling somewhat naturally into. the following classifications:— —Goods not to be had of American manu- facture. 4 —-Goods in the manufacture of which, either as to quality or style, America has nol yet caught up to her competitors abroad, ‘ : —Goods of recognized worth fo be @btained at lower prices abroad—and they are legion. —Millinery and articles of women's dress orig- inating in Paris. len million dollars’ worth of these goods we import this year direct from the countries of origin. From! England, France, Ireland, Belgium; Spain and Italy and Russia; from Germany and Austria; from Czecho-Slovakia; from China end Japan and the Philippines. Direct importations to you. Direct importations. That is important. No profit for you to pay except the usual profit we mark on any merchandise we buy. Eliding entirely the profit that the retailer, without extensive foreign connec- tions, must pay to the importer from whom he buys. The Gimbel organization in foreign countries is sec- ond to none in the world, Weare not better known in New York City than in Paris. Our headquarters there is under the leadership 6f perhaps the most bril- liant business ambassador bearing credentials from America to that Capital of Style. Radiating from thence, and in daily communication with him, are the Gimbel Headquarters and Outposts in every quarter of the Old. Worlds, most of them captained by trained merchants who have been a part of the Gimbel organization for years. ‘These are the men and women who scour the markets of the world constantly in quest of the things you want and need. Day in and day out throughout the year, either on their own or accompanied by our uyers resident here, on the occasion of their fre- quent visits abroad, they are gathering the world’s best for you. At a recemt convocation here in New York of the foreign representatives of the Gimbel Stores, the point was made that we had perhaps failed in making known to the public the great advantages accruing to this store and to its patrons from the supremacy of the Gimbel foreign connections. In consequence of which we shall tell you, from time to time, as well as we may, the story of the store’s importations. Of which story this page is but the first chapter.
