Golf certainly has its rewards While their non-golfing colleagues were busy looking over the books and talking with hopeful persons who wanted to borrow money, about 100 New York bank officials called it “a bank holiday’’ and spent yesterday on the Inks of the Westchester-Biltmore Country Club in Rye, instead of in the swivel chair, The cause of their merry exodus from financial precincts was the an- nual tournament of the Bankers’ Ath- letic League of New York, comprising officers, directors and trustees of New York’s banking institutions, ‘The aim of the representatives of the banks was to capture the massive silver trophy which Alvin W. Krech, President of the Equitable Trust Sompany, had offered to the winning team. The cup, which must be won three times before permanent owner- ship is established, was won by the golfers from the Guaranty ‘Trust Company, which will keep it until the links battle next year—and may- be longer. The tournament was scheduled for 10.30 A. M. @nd strangely enough the first group teed off at exactly that hour. By 2 o'clock everybody had done his best or worst, and was either gloating or enunclating the alibi, While the majority were at lunch in the grill, the officials of the tournament wrestled with mathe- matics on the porch of the caddy house. This is tiow the gcocre was deter- mined, according to one of them, who gravely admitted that \t was hard to explain, Each of the contesting teams had fiye members, who were numbered one, two, three, four and five. Each number one man, for in- stance, played against all the other number one men, and the winner of the entire group was awarded a score in points which totalled the differ- ence between his own score and the scores of his opponents. R. C. James of the American Ex- press Company was the Walter Hagen of the financial men, He won the cup offered for the low medal score with a card of 83. A handicap of 4 also made him high man for the low net score, but the cup for that auto- matically went to C. A. Corliss of the Chemical National Bank, whose 24 handicap brought his gross down to 81. The committee who handled the tournament comprised C, E, Reld of the Bank of America, and also Prest- dent of the League; John Bunke of the Fifth National, and Robert Ham- fIton of the State Hank.
