| Broadway this week are banks in Robin Hood” at the Lyrto are “One Exciting Night” at Apollo; Enighthood Was in Flower,’ ask. And while we were dealing in Reel Reviews By DON ALLEN The outstanding film features ong “Ollver Twist,’ at the Strand, with Jackle Coogan as Oliver, and ‘‘Douglas Fair- to-night, Among the other films now on view the “The Queen of the Moulin Rouge” at the Cameo; “The Sin Flood,” at the Capitol “When at the jonte Cristo," at the 44th Street ‘The Man Who Saw To-morrow,” at the Rivoll; and “The possible Mrs. Bellew,” at the Ri- ‘alto. Willlam Fox ts scheduled fer two premieres this week, starting with “The Town That Forgot God" at the Astor to-night. The second will be that of “The Village Blacksmith” at the 44th Street Thursday night, Criterion; PAS N REVIEW At the Strand Theatre thi they have, in “Oliver Twist,” with Jackie Coogan as Oliver, a screen masterpiece of human interest. Al! im all, “Oliver Twist” is the best picture we've seen in months. Splendidly cast, wonderfully photo- graphed; superbly acted—the Dick- en's story makes as good a bit of Screen entertainment as one could superlatives, we should not have overlooked the direction—as near per- fection as any story that has been screened, and Frank Lloyd, respon- @ible for this end of the production, ts to be heartily congratulated. To us, there never has been a more appealing character shown in a cinema than little Jackio as the downtrodden workhouse waif, And to y one who has any lingering doubts as to Jackio’s ability as a real actor —all we can advise is to see him as Oliver. And, if there is one thing we gave thanks for, it was that Jackie Coogan does not, in Oliver Twist. resort to any cute, childish tricks. He's an honest-to-goodness actor, and Proves it beyond tho slightast shadow of a doubt. Never overplaying; never overact- mg and never once resorting to a glycerine-prompted tear, Jackie pulls and tugs away at the heartstrings until the beholder is really glad to be sad. It is so far ahead of ‘'The Kid," “My Boy’ and ‘Trouble,’ Jackie's other outstanding screen efforts, that it shouldn't be written of on the same typewriter. But, while Jackio is deserving of every atom of praise for his triumph, we mustn't lose sight of the fact that &@ goodly portion of the self-same Triumph (spelled quite correctly with ® capital “‘T’), must go to Lon Chaney, who as Fagin, gives a per- formance that would be hand to equal. Chaney, because of the facility of his make-up, 1s known far and wide as “the man with 1,000 faces."" Never mind his face when you see Oliver Twist; watch his hands! Lon Chaney, we believe, has the most wonderfully expressive pair of hands on the ‘screen. If you miss “Oliver Twist’ you'll miss by far the best picture of the year. If we could roll our R's after the manner of a telephone operator try- img to get a Morningside number, we'd be able to spell Thrill the way we'd have to in order to desembe “The Queen of the Moulin Roug?,” hich started an elght weeks’ rua at he Cameo Theatre yesterday.
