‘Tin THE LOCAL R EALM OF MUSIC wey i Messrs. Werrenrath, Powell and Mme. Galli-Curci Give Concerts. By Frank H. Wines. Reinala Werrenrath, baritone, shot @ shaft of high light into the season's musical activities at his recital yester- day afternoon in Carnegie Hall. Mr. Werrenrath has the voice, the singing style, the phrasing, the diction and the Interpreter’s understanding, and his audiences are certain of yielding to the artistic spell. Yesterday there were German songs to start with, four Danish numbers, three salt-water bal- lads of Keel, and such familiar pieces as “Duna,” "On the Road to Manda- lay," ‘Wreck of the Julie Plante,’ besides added numbers in response to applause, It is a great pleasure to sit at the feet of Mf. Werrenrath’s teoh- nique, a pleasure that would be doubled could the singer inject into his work a wider variety of moods. John Powell, pianist, another Amer- icam product, from Virginia, suh, dis- played his planistic skill in Aeolian Hall. Mr. Powell ts, further, a com- poser, and a good one, but yesterday Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin and Liggt only were listed on his printed programme. Endowed with tempera- ment, feeling and a heart, Mr. Powell had chosen excellent mediums through which to flash his own attributes on his responsive listeners. The Bee- thoven sonata, op, 81 (a), Schu- ‘mann’s sonata, op. 11, in F sharp minor, and the Chopin group wero broad, tender, simple, melodic, senti- mental in turn, as the composition de- manded. The Liszt ‘‘Don Giovanni" fantasia, though brilliantly enough played, had one wondering why Don Giovanni Powell had put so much ilme on it. Mme. Galli-Curct returned to the Scene of her greatest numerical triumphs, the Hippodrome, in the evening. A tremendous gathering followed the familiar velvet outpour- ing of tone, runs, trills and roulades, not to overlook a trio of rather sketchy high notes. The prima donna still does it all in beautiful, effortless, mechanical fashion, leaving little trace of warmth, emphasis or feeling in her wake, Mlle. Oda Slobodskaja, Russian so- Prano, from the Petrograd Opera, it is said, has the temperament Mme. Galli-Curci lacks, while lacking the vocal resources that Mme. Galli-Curet possesses. This Russian artist, who had been heard with the Ukrainian Chorus, branched out into recital in Town Hall, singing an interesting programme of classic airs and na- tional operatic selections. Saturday afternoon Albert Spalding, American violinist, after aa extended stay in Europe, returned to his native recital stage. The gathering in Car- negie Hall noted that the American player's art and tone have mellowed, that his technique {s brilliant and that he is a sound and scholarly in ter-reter. In fact, as good a home- grown violinist as America can boast. Frederic Dixon, ist, also ap- peared Saturday in Aeolian Hall. His technique, too, is ample, but we whould like to sce him infuse a bit more of sentiment into his efforts. The Philharmonic Society an- nounces an interesting enlargement of its actlyities. The orchestr to give, {n addition to its regular ries of performances in C Hunter College, Cooper Lrooklyn, Vassar, Mount Holyoke and other institutions. It has also requested Henr: Hadley, associate conductor, to examine American manuscripts, with a view to performing those that are wort.
