*y Armaet tt yep tay at Urge ane eae ree eg THE EVENING WORLD, TUESDAY, OOTOBER 17, 1922. a GENE SARAZEN OUT OF HOSPITAL AND 1S AT RYE} & Youthful Star, Who Beat Walter Hagen, British Open Cham- pion, Although Seriously Ill, Will Go on Tour With Jock Hutchison as Soon as He Is Well Enough. NOTHER sporting light is going to make his bome in the Metro- A politan District. Gene Sarazen, the picturesque national open and professional golf champion who recently won a mrteb against Walter Hagen, British champion, for a big purse, despite the fact that he had to overcome a big handicap as a result of being away ‘be- bind inthe first half of the contest, and who was suffering severe pain at the time because of an attack of appendicitis, is out of the hospital again. Sarazen possesses the gameness of which real soldiers—American @oldiers—ate made, He was only in the hospital a week and a day. He has gone to the Westchester-Biltmore Country Club, where he has @ cheery room, and will remain there until he is strong enough to walk, When he gets real strong he plans to go on a tour out West with Jock Mutebieon. But just think of Sarazen overcoming a big lead and defeating such @ remarkable player as Hagen, although he Was in danger of death all the time because of playing such an exacting game as golf when threat- ened with appendicitis . As soon as the match was over Sarazen for the first time admitted that he feared he had appendicitis, and when it ve- vame evident that he was seriously ill he was rushed ‘to the hospital ard \he surgeons decided it was necessary to operate at once. Gene had hardly come out of the semi-conscious state produced by taking ana thetics than he Started talking golf, And he has been talking it ever since he regained consciousness. And the best part of it all is that Gene plans to join » local golf club, probably the Westchester-Biltmore Club. It is said that he has | aready sent in his resignation to the Highland Club of Pittsburgh, wuere be is the professional, afd that he has telegraphed to have his two cham- pionship trophjes—the National Open and Professional Golfers’ Cup— sent to the club at Rye, which makes it quite evident that he intends to join that organization, Sarazen’s folks live in this district, That is one. of the reasons that the youthful golf star wants to locate here, although the Highland Club has treated him royally, giving him all the time off that he has wanted since he won the open title. But Gene wants to locate here and it looks lke a sure thing that when the spring rolls around he will be enrolled in seme local golf club, ——— HORSES SHOW WELL AS SUES FOR BET ON ENDURANCE RIDE BEGINS DISQUALIFIED HORSE BRANDON, Vt., Oct. 17.—Seventeen of the twenty-one horses competing In the- 1928 army endurance ride finished the first day's run of 60 6-10 miles in the minimyin time of nine hours allowed by the conditions covering tho test Every horse entered completed the firet day's ride, Which begari‘at Fert Ethan Allen, Burlingtog, at 6.30 e'clogk yea- terday morning. out correctly, but a girth snapped and ‘The four entrants exceeding tite time | 44 replaced.
