PRR TEI SE eV Se TR RIT THE NEW PLAYS “The Ever Green Lady” ~ A Feeble Comedy By CHARLES DARNTON HERE is probably no one, certainly not tn this country, who can equal Beryl Mercer in the acting of old cockney women. She proved this as tho pathetically patriotic charwoman of “The Old Lady Shows Her edals” and ogain by her perfectly disreputable performance of the gin- oaked harpy in “Three Live Ghosts.” But last night at the Punch and udy Theatre she went against nature by trying to be Irish—may the saints ‘orgive her!—and for the life of her couldn't make “The Ever Green Lady’ em convincing. Buitable casting would have helped, hough I doubt ‘whether it could have aved this play, the first by Abby Ierchant to find its way here from _}Massachusetts, where the quthor is sald to have been an earnest student lot Professor Baker, ‘The Ever Green Lady” is a feeble comedy. Yet It j/must be granted that Miss Merchant has hit upon a good idea for the stage Pby having a woman of sixty who has “spent most of her life at the wash- {tub get away from the unbearable idleness and petting of her wealthy “0n's home on Riverside Drive while the other members of the family are |at_ Palm Beach and enjoy a vacation jin'a tenement, much like the Jewish |mother in one of Fannie Hurst's .{S8tories. She not only takes upon her- self all the work of her washerwoman but turns the boiler on the stove into »|@ still and brews a remedy for influ- been forbidden to meet again. This phase of the matter is far less inter- esting than the old woman's unselfisty operations as a distiller, based on ex- pert knowledge dating back to the good old days when she made her own Irish Dew over a peat fire. The arbitrary manner in which she is saved from further consequences by her son and taken back to his home is of no more interest than the re- porter's final arrangement to let her work for his bride to her heart's con- tent. But something should be done to prevent the ridiculous situation in which the father suddenly changes his attitude toward the reporter by embracing him and fervently crying “My son!" Miss Mercer was a motherly old soul, with simple, homely touches of character, but “niver'’—to use ono of her words—truly Irish. In this re- spect Robert T. Haines was even more hopeless as the son. It seemed a pity that G. M. Kerrigan, who played the sixty-year-old messenger boy amusingly, couldn't’ have shared his rich brogue with those so much in need of It. eeepc iainsnnens OWNERS WIN SUIT OVER COLLAPSE OF THEATRE Wives of Two Brooklyn Victims Asked $50,000 Each.
