Lucas and deputies are to-day scouring the countryside for five armed men who shot Cashier George H. Whittaker of the First Na- tional Bank at Hopedale, O., fifteen miles from here, and probably fatally {injured him in attempting to rob the bank. No money was taken, the robbers being put to flight when Miss Jesvic Snyder, assistant cashier, woreamed and gave the alarm. Mayor A. D. Bolan of the 4th Inspection District «p- peared before Magistrate Simpson in the West Side Court to-day in answer to a summons obtained by Aaron Reuben, restaurateur at No. 2270 Broadway, who charges the Inspector with oppression and alleges that po- leemen have been illegally kept in the restaurant by Bolan, working in three shifts to cover the twenty-four hours of the day. The police were stationed there after a liquor raid, but when Reuben was exonerated on the liquor charge the police were not withdrawn, Bolan was represented by the Cor- Poration Counsel's office to-day and am adjournment was taken until Oct. ® Incidentally it was brought out that the police were withdrawn at 21.45 o'clock last night. Dr. Felix Scardapane, the family physician, knew that for a year the husband hed been out of work and had just gotten a job. For him to give his blood meant probably the loss of the position, To pay for the necessary life fluid was out of the question, Time was an element to be considered so the physician, ten years ago an immigrant boy; called in Dr, Anthony Tinindini and Dr, Joseph Linello to perform the transfusion and himself gave up the quart of blood, To-day the patient {s reported on the road to recovery.
