i ' : i THE EVENING WORLD, MONDAY, AUGUST Glittering Luna Picked by Lot For Pompous E Royal Rulers of Coney Carnival nthronement of Joseph E. Howard Takes Lead in Ballotting and Be- comes “King for a Day” (Maybe Longer) and Beauteous Queen Ethlyn Rejoices. ” Out of the wind over the week-end, there sprang through the hail and rain a new King from the people to grasp the royal sceptre. All hail King Joseph E. Howard! Hail, hail and a lot of rain. Only the new King spells it reign. Ha, by my troth a Kingly joke but an un-Kingly advantage to take of the Court Jester who must have got in out of the rain The news was brought to Queen Ethlyn Clark at a merry party over which she presided in her Vaude Villa on the Lake of Coney, sipping sac and cutting out Evening World coupons for the contest for the twin Mon- archs of Coney Island Carnival Week. @ The party became the merrier be- cause of the advance of King Howard, who is the one consort above all the noble nights and esquires in the royal lists Queen Ethlyn would choose for a partner to share witli er the purple on Coney'’s Carnival throne. By royal decree it was decided in secret conference of the King makers and so indited by Royal Scribe Kister that the crowning of the King and the Queen of the Mardi Gras shall take place in Luna Park on Monday, the llth night of September Bir Herbert ns, courtly caterer to the fun-loving people of Luna, has promised that the elevation to the throne of merriment will be acco panied by the most elaborate of cer monies. The lake of Luna will ripple with the rhythmic glide cf luxur- fant gondolas to soft music wafted across the waves by the musicians of Sir Arthur Pryor’s royal band. A veritable tower of light, spearing the sky and shedding its dazzling rays athwart the throne, will spring into being at a given signal, and myriads of lights will flash back their joyous greetings from peak and pagoda and pyramid, while fountains will gush forth in prismatic sprays from rocks and rills and beds of roses. ‘A royal night, forsooth, filled with fairy favors to the most beautiful Queen that fickle Chance may en throne, and the lucky man of the peo- ple who may be called to her side. And then will follow the glittering and glorious pageant adown Surf Avenue, by castle and cottage, winding through scenic railways, by merry making merry-go-rounds, through crowds of Carnival spirits and showers of con- fetti, with bands of music and bril- liant floats filled with beautiful girls and merry men—down, down, drown- ing the roar of the surf beating on Caney's shore, past Steeplechase Park and into the realms of Danceland. The King and the Queen of the Mardi Gras will share the joys of the first night of the Carnival in the fairy bowers of Luna Park. Great was the demand for the pres- ence of the Royal Pair and for the] q, logation of their enthronement. And so the Knights of the Carnival, from whom all royal edicts flow up to the time when the King and the Queen shdll reign over Coney’s fairy land, (thered about the round table by the side of the Giant Racer, and were much perplexed. Bir William Mangels, who by grace of, his gray hairs presided, called upon, in his worry, Sir William Melnch, Chancellor of the Exchequer, passed the royal buck to Sir Al- fred Feltman, Roya! Caterer of Coney, whp promptly tendered the Maple Gar- den for the ceremony. “By my faith!" cried Sir Edward Dowden, the Sir Henry Hotspur of Coney, and Polltician-in-Plenty of Steeplechase Park, ‘‘we have a beautiful throne on the banks of the in@loor pool at Steeplechase, an ideal plkce methinks for the crowning of the most beautiful Queen that ever bossed the King of the Mardi Gras. Take the King—give us the Queen!" But they didn’t. Bir Samuel Gumpertz arose from Dreamland and doffed his shining straw helmet. “Place within my cady," said he, “the names of Steeplechase and Felt- mans’ and Luna, and let the Royal Scribe of The Evening World with- draw one of the slips, and whichever name he shall draw therefrom shall be designated as the throne room of bath the King and the Queen, and the park the scene of their first night's n ‘And so it was agreed, but with an amendment that next year the lucky one of the night should be eliminated in the drawing, the latter being limit- ed to the two who were left, and in the year following the third place would be the natural choice, d in the silence of the carnival erence and in the presence of Inspector McEwen and Capt. Hughes of the Royal Coney Island Constabu- lary, the name of Luna Park wes drawn from within the helmet. (Tuesday, it was decided, shall be Feltman night. and on Wednesday night the Royal Pair will be the guests of Louis Staueh. Thursday night, which will be Firemen's Night, be- sides, will fall to Dreamland, and the Royal couple will find amusement in ing will awarded later in Luna Park. be done, and the prises Two More Popular Candidates For Coney Island’s Royal Honors Bo the contending Kings and Queens in The Evening World contest may contemplate what has been prepared for their entertainment, and learn how worth while the winning of the two ruling titles will be King Howard shot ahead of King Joe Reid, who had reigned on the tem- porary throne of Coney for five days; but the temporary victory has only spurred the supporters of the Feit- man Favorite to redouble and swords bared to the hilt. On Saturday, just at sunset, lancers, their ef- forts in his behalf, and they have en- tered tho final week of the tourna- ment with arms bared to the shoulder when the sun shot a few rays of hope through the driszling rain, there rode up to the Castle gate a great force of the sun setting fire to the heads of their spears, and their leader demanded that the drawbridge, which be lowered. Very quiet were the subjects of Queen Martha Mansfield over the ‘week end. Also very mystifying the movements of the adherents of Queen Grage Mulroney. But down in the realms of Dan land, where Count Busont holds sway, they were busy, very busy counting pons for bonny Queen Grace. "We have coupons galore !"* quoth Don Jose Johnson. ‘Just watch them turn into votes next week." And on Wednesday night, it’ Mas been decreed, there will be a great celebration in honor of Queen Mul- roney in Danceland. Fifty coupons bearing the name of Her Grace will be the price of admission, andthe Count Busoni’s villa will be decorated a» never before, and the Dixieland Band will discourse sweet music while the devotees of Grace will dance amid soft lights and showers of coupons.
