By Capt. Robert Scofield Wood. NOTES OF INTEREQT, M. U. Wallach, the radio enthusia §Wwhose advice concerning the elimina- tion of power line interference proved 80 helpful to brother fans in and around White Plains, has written us further concerning his radio experiments, In the following excerpts from his inter- esting letter radio experimenters will find some valuable matter which Will clear up @ number of hitherto unan- ewered questions: “Experimenting with grid leaks, 1 rewardeg with unusual results. 1 used @ fixed condenser in the detector circuit of .0005 microfarads capacity. ‘Thia type {s fitted with clips to accom: modate tubule? grid leaks. By experi- menting, with these leaks J found that @ detector tube responds readily to aly most apy change tn the grid circuit. On damp days a leak of approximately one: alt megohm produces better result an @ne of greater value, On warm Gays & leak of one megohm produces good results, and on cool days or eve- } nings a leak of from ons to three megohms produces a greater valume of tone, Due to climatic conditions, some broadcasting station# seem to transmit fm @ mushy tone. Varying the-grid leak bas overcgme this consideraply, “an experiment, which I found would produce easier tuaing. wag the combin- ation of @ variable condenser and a wariometer connected in series, viz: the rectly te my ground and antenna posts. ‘This seems to act as a stabilizer. The Getector circuit functions more evenly, and ] notice an increase in the intensity of the reception of broadcasted concerts. ‘This does not affect the strength of the C. W. signals, but it does increase the yolume of tone when music or speect fs broadcasted. This in no way acts as & loeding coll. The wave length remains game, but better control of the circuit 1s asgured. | use this in conjunction with the grid leaks. If « deteoter cireuit does not function prop- erly with this addition, reverse the con- nections-rotor to stator."* ——___—_—_—_— { QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS. | D. B. C.—"Which of the three follow- ing materials will make the best panel: bakelite, three-ply, or a piece of well- seasoned oak?” Answer—Any one of the three will make a very good panel provided it is of bar gee thickness 80 it will not. warp. f the three, how- ever, the bakelite is the most desirable. Fan— “Can a regenerative set be made with honeycomb coils in place of @ vario-coupler and a tickler coll? With the very large battery your set will be out of operation during the period ot charging. With the two smaller teries you will be obliged to have t recharged on the outside at some vice station, which will be an expens! ftem in the cost of operation, to sey nothing of the cost of the spare bat- | tery. In my apartment I have a v convenient steam radiator but for some unknown yeason {t won't do as a ground. The nearest water pipe {s in the kitchen at the far end of the apart mont. Will it be possible to run a wi to the kitchen around six right angle turns without Interfering with the r ception? Iam asking because I Gndel stand that the ground connection must be made in ag short and direct a path s possible.” Answer--If you are ab- solutely sure that it Is the fault of the radiator system and not the connectio: to it, by all means make use of the water line no matter if you have to tuke the connecting wire around a dozen right angle turns, It will serve as 4 ground without any noticeable difference to your reception. The six right angles are the most direct path that you can take, f WWZ—New York ‘ 360 Metres. 115 P.
