Reel Reviews By DON ALLEN For years and years—just how many we won't try to figure up--Monte Cristo has heen boasting that the world, or the greater portion of it, was his'n. And last night he proved it sereenically speaking, when he wn- wound his rather eventful life on the screen at the Forty-fourth Street Theatre under the chaperonage of the William Fox menage. As far as the screen's Edmond - Dante is concerned, in appropriating the universe as his own particular Property, we think he took in too much territory. If Edmond had stalked into a close- up and shouted: “The Bingtown Bugle, the Wellsville Optic, the Fle- gende Blatter and the Anti-Saloon League News are Mine!" he'd have been about right, but when he sticks to that old slogan of “The World is mine!" he is slightly wrong, that ts, as far as The Evening World 1s con- cerned. If there is one thing in this world we are anxiously awaiting, it is a big movie spectacle—a ‘One," million-dollar picture,” that will sneak into our midst and try to get by on its merits, We, for one, are frankly this over-press-agenting or “'Two- weary of idea. forth so little—in comparison. It promises so much and gives All of which mighf lead one to be- leve that we do not consider “Monte Cristo” a good picture! Which ts a wrong idea entirely. We do think “Monte Cristo’ is a good picture, but don't think it's as good a picture as the Fox folk thiak It Is. AnyWay, everything went off as smoothly as porpoise oil at the open- ing last night, and “Monte Cristo,” if you have read the romance, is well worth seeing. If you haven't read Dumas's story—by all means see Monte Cristo in film form at the 44th Street, John Gilbert tries hard and, in a way, makes good in the titular role, but he isn't massive nor impressive Police Commissioner Rich- inright, who was prominent in a front row seat, would have looked the part much more effectively. The acting honora must all go to ‘William V. Mong, who as Caderousse, the wily and bibulous, not to say murderous, innkeeper added another masterful portrayal to his siready large lst. _ LONG BEACH BENEFIT FOR ISRAEL ORPHANAGE ‘Thirty beautiful mannikine wearing exquisite gowns and lingerie, twenty of the most prominent screen stars now in the East, and a vaudeville en- tertainment by the leading theatrical artists of the varieties, are just a few of the features that will be seen at the tainment to be held at the Ho- b Ae ach, on Tuesday evening, Aug the proceeds of THE EVENING WORLD, TUESDAY, AUGUST which will be donated to the Iaraei] Orphan Asylum, whose homo was de- stroyed in the Arverno fire, leaving more than 200 little children home- less. ‘A committee of prominent residents of Long Beach have taken charge of the arrangements for the affair, and preparations are under way to accom- modate more than 1,600 people.
