THE EVENING WORLD, MONDAY, AUGUST 7, T9097 Voting for Coney’s Carnival Monarchs Begins To-Day by Evening World Coupons fsland,"‘ Mardi Gras Mad,” Can Think of Nothing but Splen- dor of September Week of Pageantry, Pomp and Fun. To-day marks the beginning of the plebiscite which will proclaim the King and the Queen of the Coney Island Mardi Gras for the Carnival Week, commencing on Sept. 11 and eontinuing till and including Sept. 17 It has been decreed by the Carnival Company of Coney Island, which has in charge the celebration of ‘1922 Coney Island Mardi Gras Revue,’ that the voting for the royal person- (ages shall be conducted through the columns of The Evening World, and a coupon entitling the holder to a vote will be found on page two of this pa- per. From to-day until Sept. 2 every @dition of The Evening World will contain one of these coupons, which are self-explanatory. All you have to do, you who have your favorites for the King or for the Queen, who will together occupy the Mardi Gras throne, is to cut out the coupon, write in the name of your candidate for the King or for the Queen, and mail it to The Evening World Mardi Gras Editor, P. O. Box No. 247, or hand it in at any office or branch office of The Evening World. The contest for the monarchs twain who will share the seafoam throne of Coney for the Carnival Week is g0- ing to be the hottest ever waged in the carnival history of the Island, and the reason for this is found in the fact that the Mard! Gras ts to be the merriest, maddest, fun-loving fete ever celebrated on or out of Coney. There have been Kings and there have been Queens of Coney Island's various Mardi Gras, but never on who presided over such a glorious and -, Blittering pageant as will be pre- sented to the play and fun loving public in the week of Sept. 11 Coney Island 1s already Mardi’Gras mad and nothing else ts being spoken of. The work done to date has been the greatest in the way of accom- plishment that has ever marked the any carnival. The * floats which have been ubmitted by Artist Rube Merrifield ve been hailed with enthustasm and approved on sight. The royal float on which will rest the throne of the King and Queen will be a work of art and an attrac- tion that will be followed and cheered the length of the line of the parade The monarchs will occupy the high eet throne of purple and gold, and below the throne will be a platform on which there will be three beautiful | girls as standard bearers for the } house of royalty. A winged griffin J Jp suard the throne and a fester 1 make merry from his perch be- hind the throne. Coney Island's own float will be “a gem of purest ri rene.” It will be a float filled with bathing beauties; but oh! what a boat and what bath- ing beauties. Thera will be rolling waves and the beauties will rock their own boat. Big sea dragons will steer the rocking boat through the rolling waves, and Ed Tilyou has informed the Carnival Committee that Steeple- hase will furnish the bathing beau- ties. Mr. Tilyou is one of the live wires of Coney, and Eddie Dowden, one of his able assistants in Steeplechase says that if they leave it to him to pick the mermaids his selection will be a knockout. Photographs of some of the Steeplechase mermaids bear ut the Dowden boast and Mr. Tilyou as promised to lend a few to The ning World in the next few days. ‘The Beauty of the Nile’ is another artistic creation, which it is promised will be worth going miles and miles to see. Do you remember Cleopatra's Barge? Of course you do. Well, there will be a reproduction of Cleo patra’s human motor boat, with some beautiful Coney Island or Manhattan cr Brooklyn Cleopatra reclining on the beautifully upholstered cushions of a Nile pleasure craft, with an Egyptian beauty, also from Coney, or Brooklyn, Staten Island, the Bronx, New Jersey, Queens or Manhattan, propelling the boat and three or four more beauties at the oars, Some of the biggest men and women of the country are going to be invited to participate in the glorious Coney Island pageant. Last year they had 4 Labor Day parade and Sam Gomp- ers, President of the Americn Federa- tion, was at its head. Sam arrived a ittle late and his automobile was held p by the police. “Tell the police who I am," Mr. Gompers to his chauffeur “What's that?" demanded a big cop, the next minute, looking the gre: labor chief over. ‘What are you try- ing to do, kid me? Say, don't you suppose J know who Sam Gumpertz is? Exerybody on the tsland knows iam, Back up." And it required Sam Gumpertz of the Dreamland Freaks and Chairman of the Music Committee to appease the cop and tell him that the Sam he had held up was a bigger man than even he. And Gumpertz is one of the big ones at Coney. Ask anybody. But the cop blushed when he found out who Sam Gompers was, but the labor chief waved his hand and bude the parade proceed, sald Frank Kister, Assistant Secretary of the Carnival Committee, reports that all kinds of communications are coming in from all kinds of people and associations who want to be in the rade, or 1 where, anywhere im the Carnival ranks. There won't be nights enough in the week to accomodate all who want to have 4 night to them selves or for themselves, but there is one night which has been spoken for as a sure thing proposi- the night for the [ed William B. & EY Ou= STEEPLEC! stivel Wie Johnson as President of the Gravesend Exempt Volunteer Firemen’s Association at Coney Island, but the two presidents, present and past, are working together for the suc- cess of Firemen’s Night and for the success of the entire Carnival as well The State Convention of the Volun- teers takes place at Freeport, L. Ly on Aug. 14, 15 and 16, and President Fitzpatrick is going to be there not only as a delegate but as a committee of one to work up enthusiasm among the red-shirted brethren and have them head toward Coney Island dur- ing the week of Sept. 11. “We have our minds made up," said President Fitzpatrick, “to have the biggest and most picturesque Fire- men's Night ever scen on Concy Is- land or anywhere else in New York."* Barron G. Collier, who owns Luna Park, is now in Europe, but h left Instructions that Luna's displa nd contributions to the Carnival shall be second to none in line. Mr, Collier is at the head of the Boy Scouts and a@ great turnout is looked for from that progressive association Truly, no Kings nor Queens ever ruled over anything like the number of subjects, nor led such a wonderful, colorful and glorious pageant as will the next King and Queen of the Coney Island Mardi Gr Begin voting for your favorite can- didate to-day, Cut out your coupons and mail them, or drop them into any of the offices enumerated on the cou- pon; and keep cut s and mailing or dropping up to noon on Sept. 2 A few days later the names of the new monarchs will be made known through the columns of The Evening World All hail, the King of tho Mardi Gras!
