Qne Smart De- signer Has Cre- ated a Master- piece From a Dameosk Table Cloth. ~By Margery Wells ,UMMER is the season when girls S look their loveliest—their most picturesque sélyes. ‘That is a tradition that we are used to. But, ‘this season, the designers have willed ft that we shall look not only beauti- ful but posteresque as well. Now, I hear some of you saying that you are not the poster type. Cer- tainly not—unless you choose to make Yourself so. Any one-can be a poster faaiden who wants to do it that way, @nd she can do it with the greatest @face and charm. She need not be fresky looking (so many people naturally think of the poster dea that way), but she can carry all the dain- titiess and sweetness to make her feel f= her own environment and she can, ‘at the same time, look like a modern picture girl. | All this is because we are becoming much more artistic In our clothes. we are being appreciated as Beautiful dressers rather than just dressy dressers. = When one of the smartest design- ‘rs in town tukes a table cloth—ot @amask—and makes Yrom it her most @uccessful model of the season, then we have reached un artistic freedom that may well astonish the populace. What is what has been done, It is really so. Poster Patterned Frocks, They take the filmiest of textures— ® voile for instance, and on that they Print large floral designs in squared ‘off patterns. There is one in the pic- ‘ture worn by the young lady who is Festing on the floor, ‘There is a white mull collar with a Aeep Irish crochet edge and there are ‘wide cuffs to match that idea. Then there are streamers of brilliant orange picoied ribbons to match the orange buds in the brilliantly colored printed @esign, whereon there are green and purple and black besides the orange eoloring. But, there is so much white fm the background that, though the design is garish in the elements of its coloring, it still gives a coolness of tmpression because of its white back- ground and its very thin texture. Modernist Bathing Cap. ‘When you once adopt the picture dea of dressing, you are more than likely to become literally obsessed by it You will take it into your surf bathing clothes before you are aware. For evening the little gilk shoulder capes have quite taken the place of summer furs. Do you notice that we don't have nearly so many jokes about furs in summer thrown at us as we torian era. Its background is tan, or, ‘more accurately, a deep yellow, and on its surface is printed a regular eretonne design in large and splash- ing figures. ‘There is one awfully nice point @bout a frock of this sort. The ex- Danse and stunningness of its pattern absolutely eliminate the necessity for trimming of any sort. All you have ‘to do is to see that the line is perfect and becoming to your styie of beauty. ‘Then all that is necessary is the sew- ing of a few seams and all is well. - Printed Silks Popular. and white are the colors in fhe’ printed silk dress with its cape t) match. To it de- volves the duty of keeping up the decorative scheme as it were. It is new the elintre areund which all eves re focused. It is the keynote of the costume as a whole, The prettiest bathing caps are the ones made of the brightest colors of silk. Some of the girls are tying scarts of brocades around their heads. Some are using wide ribbons in tight festoons, with bows hanging off at one side in the perkiest of manners. Then there are bathing caps that come from France and are as daring @s can be. They are copied and imi, tated in all sorts of fashions, but two of them in their original states are pictured on this page. They are made of polka dotted and plain water- proofed silks that are in every way most satisfactory for beach and bath- ing wear. They are made so that they hug the head closely and becom. ingly, Of course there is apt to be con- cealed under their artistic folds a tight \ittle rubber cap which holds the per- manent wave carefully in place and allows the fanciness to be added with. out any undue hurt to the locks un- derneath, In the cap that has the ear tabs of the pleated silk, the foundation hat ts made of a round piece of the rubber- ized silk that is held in place by a rubber band run through a casing. ‘The other cap is made of a shade of bright green waterproofed silk and it is adorned with an edging of a fold of cream colored silk that winds its way around the cap and makes a pattern which is the solesadornment of the little hat. Other bathing caps have little rub- ber flowers arranged around their edges or they are supplied with an gays so arranged that they complete tLe surface of the hat itself. DVANCE models in hats that AA ere now coming over. from Paris are in velvet, duvetyn or hatter’s plush and some of us will be wearing these within a few weeks. There seems to be a strong tendency toward the upturned brim among these early shapes. The black hat with bright trimmings among which yellow, green, red and sapphire blue are prominent, are in the majority among these first showings of fall models, The old-time mitt which our fash- fonable grandmothers -wore in the summer time has been struggling for recognition for several seasons and the saleswomen in one shop assert that they &¥e finding acceptance now. The splendid variety” shown in the shops is most alluring end, probably, by another summer we sball all be wearing them, They are offered in silk lace in “exquisite designs and come in all the modish colors. - A wired hip treatment seen on one frock suggests possibilities for apply- ing a new touch on an old dance frock. It is of lace about sixteen inches deep at the front and back, and hajf that width over the hips. It is of tvory lace that blends beautifully with the pink silk frock. A shower of roses attached to long green stems falls from a single rose at the back, normal waist lin This treatment in metaific lace over blue or red would be effective. The sales- people declare the demartl is increas- ing and one buyér predicts this will be the greatest jewelry year we have had in fifteen years. The gathered assortments in the shops seem to up- hold this prophecy. The large demand ts probably due to the fact that in this colorful season {t is necessary to have a variety of jewelry to obtain har- mony in @costume. Black and white effects promise to lead during the coming season, and handsome novel- ties are being displayed in combina- tions of jet and crystal or pearls and frequently the three are combined with effective and exquisite results. Bridal footwear constitutes a charm- ing display in one shop. These slip- pers are of white satin, of course, and some have straps and cutouts, while others are without straps which, by the way, seems to be an incoming vogue. One smart model has.a hand- some pearl studded clasp. Others have dainty rosettes of white tulle and orange blossoms which are set on the front of the slipper as we are-ac- customed to see rosettes but quite as often they are placed on the side. In one shop where handkerchiefs are specialized ft is sald the present demand 1s divided between the ponttee and the black handkerchief. both are ideal.for use while travelling may explain this demand. The black handkerchiefs are a novelty dl- rect from France where they are said to be very popular. “They are made, attractive by drawn threads and em- brotdery in gay colors. The black and white effect is’ considered partjcularly smart. ‘That %' , top to fit, N | iN eupase-aceieecuaseemman) Don’t Throw Away That Evening Dress é By Grace M. Black. Then, of course, it will have to have sleeves of some sort. Look into your scrap basket where you keep odds and ends of lace and you may find thers just enough lace to set into the neck of the dress. A very unique method which a young lady employed in making a street frock out of a blue taffeta evening & ress was to fill in the neck with silk and cover it with three rows of geor. gette cut in the form of petals and picoted at the edge, She set in long flowing sleeves of georgette, Picoted at the edge.
