t io 2) ile Rubber Men Bending Every Effort to Increase Product and Meet Demand. By Roger Batchelder. ‘The constantly increasing demand for rubber has forced growers of the trees to multiply their efforts of pro- duction, according Willlam P. Flynn, who has just returned from Ris plantations in Borneo and is at he Pennsylvania. “A rubber plantation usually con- sists of between 600 and 1,000 acres of land, each acre bearing 100 trees, which reach their maturity in about five years,"' Mr. Flynn related, “The trunk of tho tree is tapped early in the morning by a Chinese or Japan- ese coolie, who divides the trunk into four parts. One part is tapped ach year for four years, so that at the end of that time new bark has , grown and the process can be re- Peated. Hach quarter is divided into 465 portions, so that i. can be tapped each day in the year. to ‘ "A single operator can tap about * 400 trees a day. He collects the cups which are attached to the trees, empties their contents into a pail, and carries it to the factory for re- fining. Within 10 days the rubber is ready for the market." THE UP-STATE FIREMEN. Walter Danielson of Rome, N. Y., who is at the Commodore, reports that his home town is all puffed up over the election to the Presidency of the State Fire Chiefs’ Association of George M. Bower, Chief Engineer of the Rome Fire Department. Like so many real firemen, Chief Bower has been a bug on the subject of fires since boyhood, At the age of ten he Joined the old Rome Department and was enrolled in Washington Hose Compa No. 2, as a torch boy. The convention of the association, Mr Panielson concludes, was held recent- ly at Poughkeepsie. SUNSHINE FROM THE WEST. “Tho West felt depressed for two years," declared L. B. Strothman, President of the Towa Automobile, who is in town from Waterloo, ‘but People simply grinned and took things as they came, and now there seems to be clear sailifg west of Chicago. “The farmers are expecting fine crops this year and are contented and hopeful. ‘This is not merely a per- sonal observation. I come in contact with many tourists, and I hear very Uttle talk of hard times nowadays.’’ ery ALL ABOUT WHALES. Hans Bull, who is at the Pennsyl- vania from Bergen, Norway, is the director of the biggest whale oll pro- ducing company in the world and knows more about whales than Jonah “When you sec a whale spouting you can tell that he is having his afternoon tea," Mr, Bull informs us. “Myae whalebone les in a network in thé whale's mouth, He sucks in a Dig school of small fish and blows the water out of his mouth, while the holds back the fish, Whales are par- ticularly fond of shrimp,"* he “The old proves of larpoo! difficult," Mr. Bull went on, whale often got the better of the bar- gain. Now the whalers use big guns ‘which shoot out the harpoons with their cable achment. The whales are then played until they are tired Qert 224 often three or four harpoons are necessary before one gives in Because of its tremendous wi whale could not, of course, @e loaded ‘on a boat; he must be towed to shore and then cut up. From a big one 150 tons of produce are salvaged."” “AS OTHERS SEE US.”" “I always try to look for the good spots in a country, as well as the good qualities in its people.’” remarked Mrs, Harry Kaigh Eustis, big game huntress of South Africa, who is at the Astor on her first trip to this country. “There is so much to admire in America that I am delighted both with the country and its People. People here can't seem to do enough for one, and I have met several charming persons on the trains—something quite new for me, It is so different in England, where I have lived, and in other countries In which I have travelled and where one does not meet travelling companions.’’ oe FARTHEST FROM HOME. The “New Yorker for a Day or Two" who is farthest from home is R. G. Sheppard, who is at the Penn- wyivania, His home town, Melbourne, Australia, is about 13,000 miles from Broadway. —— MILK POSTER PRIZES AWARDED STUDENTS Contributions Dee usually High Prizes for best milk posters by stu- dents in New York Clty High Schools, in competition arranged by Dr. James P.
