pert eay _ Pete | DEALERS ACCUSE. [Who is COAL MINE OWNERS OF PRICE JUGGLING okeasiipinaa Senate Is Told That Schedule Has Been Doubled Under Hoover Agreement. WASHINGTON, June 7.—Repre sentatives of the National Retail Coal Dealers’ Association have laid before the Senate Labor Committes charges that coal operators had doubled the Price of bituminous coal at the mine on the strength of the maximum price of $3.50 fixed by Secretary Hoover. The charges were presented to Sen- ator Borah of Idaho, Chairman, and Senator Walsh of Massachusetts at an informal hearing. The Senators Promised a sweeping Investigation into the propriety and legality of Mr. Hoover's act in fixing the maximum Price unless some adjustment is made to block the increases. According to the representations made by the coal dealers, the opera- tors agreed in conference before meet- ing with Mr. Hoover that a maximum price of $3.50 a ton would be satis- factory to them. The retail dealers protested heatedly that tne Secretary of Commerce refused to give the re- taflers due consideration. They said that prior to the fixing of this price bituminous coal could be ob- tained at the mine for $1.75 a ton in spite of the coal strike. Although there was said to be no justification in greater costs for an increase in the Price of coal, the operators, so the re- tailers said, had accepted Mr. Hoover's decision as a minimum as well as a maximum price. The result, the retail dealers al- leged, would be an increase of $1.75 a ton in the cost of bituminous coal to the average consumer. “These men raised the question of the immorality and illegality of this price fixing arrangement,” eaid Mr. is done we will be impelled to hold an investigation.” In this view Mr. Borah concurred. As Chairman of the Labor Commit- tee he has power to proceed with an investigation without special author- ity from the Senate. Mr. Hoover’s right to fix a maxi- mum price for coal so as to bring abees the increase claimed was questioned and it was also asked whether the Secretary was not acting in violation of the anti-trust laws.
