ROBT SENTRY SNe m= FOR THE MURDER OF HIS HALF-BROTHER Former Montreal Abbe Con- fessed Slaying Student, Detective Testifies. TO PLEAD INSANITY Had Been Named Heir to ‘ Victim’s Estate of $165,000. MONTREAL, June 8.—In the gray old jail out at Bordeaux the Rev. J. Adclard Delorme to-day expressed surprise that yesterday's Grand Jury proceedings, which resulted in his in- dictment for the murder last January of his young half-brother Raoul, should have taken “so little time." Otherwise the accused was silent. The Grand Jury heard but a single witness, Detective Georges Lajoie, who told in detail of the former Abbe’s confession to him. Some weeks ago Delorme was deprived of his priestly functions by the Arch- bishop of Montreal. Abbe Delorme could nut let hia brother die with any stain upon his soul, he told Lajeie—according to the lattgr's testimony before the Grand Jufy—and so the night before the crime he arranged that the youth should go to confession. He was with him the next morning when Raoul received Holy Communion. Raoul, a student at Ottawa Uni- versity, had insured his life for $25,- 000, payable to his estate. He had made a will naming his half-brother sole heir to the $165,000 estate inher- ited from their father and designating the priest as administrator. “Delorme told me," the ‘detective said, “that they spent that last day together, and late in the afternoon were in asmall study off Raoul's bed- room. Raoul writing and smok- ing. The Abbe sat nearby, talking. “The younger man expressed a wish for tobacco, and the priest went to get it. He returned so ailently that Raoul did not hear him."* In one hand the priest, according to the detective, brought a towel sat- 1 with chloroform; in the other rt double-barrelled revolver, one barrel for regular cartridges, the other for air. He tiptoed up behind Raoul's chair, according to the alleged con- fession, threw the chloroform-soaked towel over his head, pressed the pistol inst the lad’s temple, and fired, Instead of the cartridge barrel, how- ever, he had placed the air barrel against his victim's head and failed to kill him. The brothers grappled and the priest fired the remaining chambers in quick succession, Lajole says he confessed The Abbe carried the body down stairs, placed it in his automobile, drove to the lonely suburb of Snow- don Junction and threw it upon the snow, Lajoie says he told him. Then he went home and next morning cele- brated mass quite as usual, No more witnesses were called and Delorme was indicted at once. Twice the charges were read to him, He refused to plead. He appeared to be glad to return to jail. His defense counsel have announced, will be in- sanity. They have asked for post- ponement of his trial until September and that he be examined meanwhile by a commission of experts. If neces- sary they will move later for a post- ponement of the trial until next March, It appears likely that these requests will be granted. The Abbie's action following his alleged confession to Lajote gave no hint that he had told such a story. As administrator of the estate he of- fered a reward of $10,000 for the ar- rest and conviction of the murderer and posted the money with the Mon-- real bank. WATER INSPECTOR Convicted of ‘Tampering| With It to Show Less Consumption. John Clapp, Inspector in the Water Department, was to-day convicted in neral Sessions before Judge John- of having tutned back the hands of the meter of the Yale Laun- dry, No, 540 West 58th Street, to stone show a less consumption of water than actually flowed through the meter.
