Pan's startling rise from a nation doing a for- elgn business of only $245,000,000 in 1900 to the fifth commercial country of the world with a foreign trade of $2,130,000,- 000 In 1920, Is disclosed in a survey just completed by the Tariff Commission. The report shows, however, that Japan, with the other great nations, suffered from the post-war depression and that during the twelve months ending April, 1921, her trade -declined 42 per ce from that of the previous year, compel ing her return to the status of importing more than she exports.
