Dish TRE THE EVENING WORLD, WEDNESDAY MAY 3,_ ~ $1000 000 SWINDIE Three Engagements in “Y ounger Set’’ Two Men Seized in Paris on Charge of Staging Raid on “Poolroom.” The arrest yesterday in Paris of two internationally active confidence men brought to light that Eric Skogstad, one of the leading bankers of Nor- way, was swindled out of $100,000 in this city in Octob: 1921, by means ot the ancient ‘‘wiretapping” game, The men under arrest in Paris are John Pincott, known to the police of this city as Jack Gordon, and Arthur Ernest Cox of London, who has no local police record, but whose picture is in the Rogues’ Gallery as a con- tribution from Scotland Yard. Pincott was arrested in this city in December, 1913, on a disorderly con- duct charge and sentenced to six months in the workhouse, On Jan. 2, 1914, his attorney, having obtained ® writ which required his rearraign- ment fn Yorkville Police Court, Pin- cott walked out of the courtroom while his case was pending and dis- appeared. Records at Police Headquarters show that Mr. Skogstad, while on a visit to London in the summer of 1914, met Cox at the Savoy Hotel. Cox accompanied him to New York on the Aquitania and on the ship Pincott, who, it appears, was votes with Cox, On their arrival in New York Skog- stad, Pincott and Cox went to the Vanderbilt Hotel. The confidence men worked slowly and carefully in show- ing Bkogstad how fortunes could be made by beating the bookmakers. They took the Norwegian banker to Albany and Troy and allowed him to win @ small sum of money in fake betting transactions. Then, according to the police, Skug- stad charged he was taken to a room somewhere in New York and with Cox’ and the other man played the races, It next was suggeeted that Skogstad draw $100,000 from the bank and ‘he three of them pool their money and make a “clean-up.” It is alleged Skogstad drew ten $10,000 bills and the next day brought it to the “poolroom” and gave It to the gushier, The money was placed] 1 on @ race, but before the results were known, a fake raid was staged and Skogstad, Cox and Pincott tied, Skogstad charges Cox and he retired at the Hotel Vanderbilt. Cox was gone when he awakened in the morn- ing. Skogstad reported the case to the Norwegian Consul and the latter notified Inspector Coughlin. Skogstad was shown nearly 100 pictures of “confidence men” and picked out four as the men who tricked him, The pictures were circulated throughout Europe and the arrest last evening of Cox and Pincott was the result, the police sald, PARIS, May 8 (Associated Press.) —The arrest of Pincott and Cox was |i: nade at the request of the American Embassy, and, despite their protests that they are innocent business men, they spent last evening in La Santa prison. The police say Skogstad must have spent a lo sum 1. his efforts to find them, as search was made in every large city of Europe before they were finally located in the most expensive suite of the fashionable Hotel Crillon, where they were ne- gotiating the sale of a large Texas ranch, ‘Larger than the principality of Monaco, and as profitable," was the way they described it to prospec- tive purchasers, —o SLATE PENCILS STIR SERENE ANN ARBOR “Seratchers” Displayed by Merchant Grabbed Up as Schoolday Souvenirs. ANN ARBOR, Mich., May 3.—An Ann Arbor grocer, giving his shelves u much needed spring cleaning to-day, found a bundle of slate penctis tucked away in a corner, He placed them on exhibition in a show window and within fifteen minutes all had been snapped up as souvenirs of the schooldays of long ago. The stray slate pencils caused little short of a sensation in this modern centre of learning. They called forth memories of the “hickory stick’ days of the primary schoo! system, of red bordered slates, of heaps of scratching and badly smudged fingers. L, A. Butler, Superintendent of the Ano Arbor Public Schools, said to-day that the slate had gone forever. He outlined three causes for its disappear- ance: Firat, the stress placed upon hygiene in the schoolroom, Second, too much noise, caused by scratching of the pencils. Third, the slate has no place in a business or an aesthetic world. In short, this is no longer the stone age, but one of pad and pencil. —_——>—_ $20,000 SABLE COAT IN STORE MYSTERY Garment Disappears From Closet in Fits jere. ‘The disappearance of a sable coat valued at between $15,000 and $20,000 from J.
