For the first time since its organi- gation the New York Philosophic So- cicty, Prof. Gregory Mason, ‘Presi- dent, was turned away in a body Jast night from Washington Irving High School, where it had conducted meetings sinco last October. The Feason given was the subject of the announced lecture, “The Bible, the Nemesis of Mankind,” by Joseph Lewis, President of the Free Think- ers’ Society of New York, Prof. Ma- son is Principal of Public School No. 437, tho Bronx. Patrick Dowd, Superintendent of the school, met Prof. Mason and about Beventy members and guests at the entrance to the school shortly before 8 o'clock and politely informed them that, under instruction from Eugene ©. Gibney, Mead of the Recreation ‘Centres, he could not allow the use of any school room for such a lecture. They then went to the Rand School in East 15th Street.
