Two Cellists Play Same Con- certo With Different . Orchestras. By Frank H. Warren. Our own Philharmonic and the visiting Philadelphia Orchestra be- came friendly rivals last evening in the concert field. As guests have rights, it is meet that they be men- tioned first. Mr. Stokowski’s pro- gramme comprised Wagner's overture to “The Flying Dutchman," Men- delssohn’s Scotch symphony, Strauss's ‘Death and Transfigura- tion” poem, and, with Hans Kindler as soloist, D'Albert's concerto for ilo, There is no better brand th endelssohn’s “Scoteh," and, undi- luted and retaining its original flavor and life, it is still potemt enough to satisfy the most exacting musical taste. The Strauss poem is familiar material for the Philadelphia men, inasmuch as they were prepar it last winter by the composer him- self, Mr. Stokowskl riv gelberg in emphasizing the virile ions of the composition. A itie D'Albert concerto e are rivalry, for the Philharmon! offered their own first cellist, Cor- nelius Van Vleet, in the same num- ber. It would be a satisfaction’ to compare the two artists, but, un- fortunately, they occupied similar po- sitions on the programme, and, while we could hear Mr. Kindler play his opening phrases, we had to be con- tent with Mr. Van Vieet's final bow. Undoubtedly, however, each artist would have applauded the other's ef- forts, Mr. Stokowski's Carnegie Hall audience was brilliant in attire and in numbers, At the Metropolitan Mr. Mengel- berg repeated the Bach suite of seven sections, the leader himself playing hord part besides keeping his orchestra together.
