The play of a patterned silk against one that is pluin has all of the ele- ments of decoration regardless of any trimming requirements And those who have in hand the manufacturing of the silks have taken all of that ir consideration They have had woven silks in white and color which include exactly the same tones that are used in the pluin surfaced silk, 80 that when the demands of a de- sign call into play the combining of the two sorts of silk there is some ground upon which to proceed. Ap the picture then vou see a Plaid Se@t of gray and hydrangea blue, the lines that make the plaids being done © in two shades of that latter iusive color. The coat is plain blue of the darker tone of the two, and it is Jined With that same subtle gray which makes the background for the skirt, Striped Trimmings in Bands. Narrow, bias bands of striped mate rials are being worked into the trim- mings of simple one-piece dresses and of suits, They are not ex rated in the least degree. The fact is that they are rather subdued in quantity but, perhaps for that very reason, they stand out pec ulidrly effectively. The bands are no wider than a quarter ora half an inch and they wre stitched down tightly to the edges to their patterns there One dress cut over the one-piece model is made of dark blue serge and uw on the skirt there are many rows of striped red and White fabric cut on show the bias so that the lines make a deco- rative pattern, Another dress las a striped lower section made with the stripes running erossWise instead of up and down, “and, these Stripes being done in tan and blue, the upper section of the frock is then made of blue to mateh "Bobons for Trimming Edges. The edges on all dresses have been rought into prominence by the rut ings of the newer fashions. See the {Affeta one in the picture. It is a per- ‘ect example of the bouffant type—so simply and so perfectly done. A fro k of this character has nothing intrin ‘leally valuaile about it, but its con- struction has been attended to with such evident care that its beauty lies odged in that particular It is a@ rose colored fpr with o hid ribbon edgings Then the bunch of tiny violet-Jlike lowers at the waistline igs made of ibbons, too, shading from the decpest earple to the lightest pinks and Mauves. It took yards and yards of arrow taffeta ribbon to do the thing, ut the result is not only quite ex vavagantly lovely but it has the ubtle effect of making the trimming kK an intrinsic part of the ‘gown self, Vgu can see that the ribbon cdging #eren fulled on just a trifle, and it s evident that that little ruse has ueceeded in adding just so much harm to the general appearance of uffiness which is so salient a char- eteristic of that type of dress. You will say that it takes an expert ~ dl fo make those little blossoms. Well, that is so, but youe-any of you—can hecome an expert of that sort if you Will only take the pains to practice a litle, Cabbage Roses of Ribbon. The wider pieces of ribbon can be wound into cabbage roses that are most effective for spots of trimming on gowns that are otherwise quite plain and unadorned. But these flowers to be effective must be large and imposing looking with a good deal of depth supplied by the satiny surface of the ribbon from which they are made, They are being used for girdles by nutking a whole string of them reach round the waistline; or they are be ing posed at just one spot at the side of the waist in the manner of the vio lets in the picture; or they are bein Narrow Rid Is Formed With Edgings, Flowers and Painted Pew Smaller Phot.
