C., Croix de Guerre with four palms; formerly Command- er 167th Squadron, Royal Air Force.) THE EVENING WORLD RADIO CLUB. Undoubtedly the most un- popular message that was ever broadcasted is as follows: This sta- tion 1s not licensed to broadcast Weather reports, market reports, mu- sic, concerts, speeches, news or simi- tor information or entertainment. To the enthusiasts this statement sus- pended indefinitely the greatest hob- by In the history of the world. Over 25,000 broadcasting stations in the United States were being op- erated on the 200-metre wave length, transmitting news, music and other information that was being anxiously sought by another 400,000 radio fans with receiving instruments, One short sentence stopped it without so much as ‘by your leave." The ma- jority of amateurs are still wonder- ing why they have been stopped. President Harding, who is a "dyed- in-the wool" radio fan, seeing the pomibility of the amateur being Squeezed out in the readjustment of the wireless field, instructed Secre- tary Hoover to start an investigation of the entire situation with a view to making recommendations for the protection and guidance of the ama- tour in the future. This committe is now looking for advice and information on which to weourately predicate its recommenda- tions for the enactment of ‘wireless legistation."* Whether or not the Department of Commerce has the right to curtail the amateurs for the present is out- side of the question, This action is momentary and will be set aside as soda as the sub-committee has fin- ished its task. fhe thing that counts now is to see that this sub-committee is sup- plied with the real facts concern- ing the position of the amateur in the field that he has created and ts now on the verge of losing. ‘Zhe Evening World Radio Club has taken upon itself the task of pre- senting to Secretary Hoover's com- mittee pertinent facta that will be helpful in establishing the amateur in the ‘‘new radio world" that is now being created in Washington.
