He says he has @rranged, some way or other, to con- use of the word. “Nifty,” in as it relates to theatres and In his work at the Music Box z ‘and the iaugh-getting value of these has made him fall head over im love with the word “‘nifty.”” ‘The jonary defines ‘‘nifty’ as “stylish; of the best quality,” and Willie always was stylish. 4 B CLASS, ATTENTION! Usten, children! To-day is exami- nation day. We have prepared a list of questions for the Straton-Brady class in verbal calisthenics and the monitor will now pass out copies. Those children who answer all ques- tions correctly will be given merit wards. And remember, when you get 100 merit cards you will be given a ploture of Izaak Walton, who was great on de bait. The questions are as follows: How many actors are in jail, why not? | How many of those you've seen act | ought to be in jail? How many preachers are in jail, for long sermons and other crimes? Do the members of church choirs hold hands? Do the players in a theatre hold stagehands? Isn't it true that the church women! are very fond of hymns? | ‘Who was the first press agent to at tend a Straton-Brady debate and have his play classed as off-color? Could Dr. Straton’s outbursts be called the 57th Street varieties? Is it true that Dr. Straton writes his sermons and then Mr. Brady rights the wrongs in them? ‘Was it Mr. Brady or Mr. Straton who coined that saying: “Religious druggists are pillers of the church"? How far can the average cow gallop before sitting down and who first said: “Talk is cheap—ening”? and | | NEW PLAY FOR CARILLO. Frederic and Fanny Hatton are writing a new play in which Oliver Moresco will star Leo Carillo, Mr. Carilio's most successful vehicle, “Lombard!, Ltd.” was from their pens.. SAM SHANNON MARRIES. Sam Shannon, the vaudeville agent and producer, is @ blushing bride- groom. He was married last week to Bessie Long, not a professional. Sam now goes home nights. A FORGETFUL, MAN. Jay Barnes, the Morosco press rep- resentative, was in a quandary last night. He was wondering whether or not he ought to take a chance and go » home to his wife, known on the stage and screen as Grace Valentine, “It's this way," said Jay. ‘'To-day is her birthday, and I have been prom- ising her a fine present for a week. But until an hour ago I had forgotten all about it. Now the stores are all closed." “What would she like to have?" we “Well,” came from Jay reflectively, “she just loves turtle soup. I wonder if there isn’t a restaurant around here somewhere that would sell me a tur- tier" At midnight turtle. he hadn't found his FOR “LETTY PEPPER.” Engaged for the cast of ‘‘Letty Pe per,” the musical version of ‘Mage’ Pepper,’ in which Charlotte Green- wood will star, are Ray Raymond, Paul Burns, Hallam Bosworth, Fran- cls Victory, Stewart Wilson and ‘Thomas Walsh. By CHARLES DARNTON. the man who fondly imagines | he may escape the responstbili« | ties of marriage by resorting te an trregular alliance, Bugene Brieux says, “My dear fellow, let me show you how utterly mistaken you are.” This ig what he proceeds to show im “Les ‘Itannctons,"” called ‘Madame Pierre,’ with more gallantry than reason, by Arthur Hornblow jr.in the adaptation given last night at the Rits Theatre. | Laurence Irving had it about righ@ | when he produced the comedy here thirteen years ago under the title of “The Incubus,” only to make @ change for the worse by cheapening it rhe Affinity’? in deference te r understanding. But as bis , and especially that of Mabet ackney, kept to its original standard the name didn’t matter. Although the Irving company put more fun Into the piece than it was given last night, the performance at the Ritz gained somt- thing more from Roland Young than his name would imply. For that mat- ter, both he and Estelle Winwood ha@ no difficulty in suggesting youthful lovers, all of which was refreshing if not dltogether droll. Better still, the ironic Xumor ofthe play, proved as diverting as ever. ‘Theré Was the same malicious delight in watching the patient, considerate Pierre suffering tortures at the hande of Charlotte, caressing or clawing him until the poor devil could scarcely, keep from jumping out of his skin. He couldn't sit on the table, nor pat w foot on the sofa. There was no rest the weary professor of natural history who had taken this “little end” into his flat, if not entirely nto his heart. When she couldn't think of anything else to say she would tearfully declare he didn't leve her any more—one of the surest ways of driving a man stark, staring mad. He had never asked her to meet his mother. Well, had he ever asked to meet her mother? And so it went, from bad to worse, with Charlotte throwing the key out of the fifth-story window, so that she might keep her lover from going to see a man who had promised him something for his treasured specimens book. Then the row with the man who had been hit by the key, only it turned out that he had troubles of his own with a woman tn the flat below, so that he and Pterre could sympathize with each other while they pretended to be engaged im a furlous battle of words. Hope of release came only when Pierre learned that Charlotte wae having something more than profes- sional relations with her dog doctor, who had won her by giving an imita- tion of a locomotive one day in the country—yes? It probably pained him more than eurprised him to find she had been lying to him. Anyway, now he would be free of her. Yes, he wou'd! But before being packed off she tore more than one leaf out of his specimen book. Those were happy days for Pierre that he passed alone, but he might have known they wouldn't last. After notifying every one she knew of her intended suicide —and even delaying her jump into the river an hour after the schodule time—Charlotte, of course, came back like a wet cat looking for a warm corner, determined to make Pierre miserable for life. If you're looking for a moral in this play, it's not hard to find. All the troubles of the helpless vic- tim of free love were quietly, yet fec ingly expressed by Mr. Young in @ capital performance. He played from the head and played with character- istic skill, Miss Winwood was a “catty,” shrewd Charlotte, but almost too attractive for the good of her role. It might have been better if she had dressed more plainly, She wasn't quite common enough, and she missed Jone of Mabel Hackney’s best tricks by not spitting fruit pits out of the window. There should also have been less gentility and, accordingly, more humor tn the Limouzin of Cecil Yapp and the Brochot of March Allen. Aa the concierge Fuller Mellish showed a better sense of character. But outside from posible faults im the acting—barring Mr. Young’s sat~ isfying work—"Madame Pierre” re- mained a delightfully mocking com- atre, now the Knickerbocker.
