14 /NEWS1,000.000 SYSTEM FOR FIRE + NARMIN SERVE Partly Opened To-Day, It Is Underground ‘and Reduces * Peril to Minimum, BOON TO THE FIREMEN. Precludes Interference and Repetition, and Rouses Only the Firemen Wanted. New York City's million-dollar fre- slarm system was partly opened for service to-day, When twenty-two of fhe 252 alarm gireuits were cut lato the new central operating station of the Transverse Road in Central Park ‘The new fire alarm central office, con- tracted for during the Administration of Mayor Gaynor and finished in.1915, ig now completely equipped and the fystem is the last word in fire ularm telegraph cdnstruction, ‘The building has capacity for re: etiving simultaneously 252 separato alarms of fire from any part of Man- huttan Island, and is equipped w ‘transmit alayma to the fire engine BROOKLYN AUTO DEALERS. MAKE + PLANS FOR SHOW Will Be Held in 23d Regi- ment Armory—Opens | March 4. | If Lhe eleventh annual exhibition of the Brooklyn Motor Vehicle Dealers Association, the 284 Regiment Armory, Atlantic 4, and lasting a» full week, is not the greatest in the’ history of the organi- zation, it will not be the fault of t Show Committee, Certainly, it will he the handsomest ever staged in Brooklyn, Things have broken nicely for 1he Brooklyn dealers this year the recent industrial show has .al- lowed the motor car dealers to mule a deal with a decorator that will make the March exhibition unusually beautiful. The Show Committee has accepted the plan offered by the firm which decorated armory for the recent Industrial show, Not that the decer tions will be the same, but the deco- rators were able to plan for both shows at one and the same time, and so conmiderable money has been saved for the motor car menu. The question of lighting the big show is being given unusual attention this year. It has always been claimed houses over 168 different circusts. Beginning to-day the new system north of 145th Street, from the Har- Yem to the Hudson Rivers, went in:o service, with new fire alarm boxes every alternate block. There are no more than ten alurm hoxes to any one circuit, and each of the new alarm boxes is of the non- jaterfering succession type, so that jg the event of more than one alarm box being pulled on any one circuit for the same fire, there will be no mixing of the nimbers at the central office, for the box that begins to tap off the alarm half a second later than the box first pulled, will au jeatically withhold functioning un the first box pulled has finished reg! tering in thé fire alarm central of fice. ‘The system opened in part for op~ ation to-day is the first all-under- ground fire alarm system in Greater New York. It has been so construct: ed that no more than four fire engin? houses are on any one of the outgo- ing eircuite. that the Brooklyn shows have beon poorly lighted. To the uninitiated, it would seem as though the lighting of @ show is only a question of lights, While this is true in a measure, there are other things to be considered. Too much Heht, or light not properly distributed, is just as bad as too little light. @hadows ruin a show, and too much Hight has a habit of throwing shadvwa. Again, the drill hall is a mighty big barn, and it is quite a problem to properly distribute the Mumination According to present plans, there will be no exhibits in the halis of the armory. In the past it has been cus- tomary to show cara in the main on- trance hall. Last year exhibits ot accessories were staged in the up- stairs hall. This always has cauved considerable crowding at spots where crowding is a@ menace to the comfort of the spectators. A new flocr plan has been figured out which will do way with this objectionable feature of former shows. An increase of 100 per cent. in the number of fire alarm aignal boxes i4 provided for in ‘the new syatem. Under the present and much anti- quated arrangement of combination underground and aerial fire alarm cables there are about 900 fire alarm oxes\on. Manhattan Island. ‘The new system provides for 1,800 alarm boxes. ‘When completely operated from the Central Park station, which will be about next summer, the new system will be hailéd with especial delight ‘by the.members of the fire force, for {& is so constructed that each alarm sent out automatically taps the cir- enite to the engine companies re- quired to respond. For the present fire alarms received over the circuits of the new system axe also recorded in the old central a on the top floor of old Fire Only the ones who are in close touch with the business realize the importance of the motor car industry im the United States and how people in every section of the country look forward to motor car shows.
