Eddie Rick- enbacker, noted for his bravery in the war, his daring on the speedway and his seventeen years of achievement tn manufacturing and selling motor cars. All the other details of this car are important, but in the final analysis they collectively have made possible an unprecedented achievement—the total elimination of vibration. At any speed, from two miles per hour to over sixty, not a particle of vibration develops. All this ts possible hrough a new mehod of balance when is readily understood by consideration of the unusual specifications of thu car. Regarding the motor; cylinder block casting consisting of six cylinders of 8%-Inch bore, cast integral with the upper part of the crank case, which is very deep section affording unusual rigidity. This block casting is so de- signed that the chain case and the fly- wheel housing 1s bolted on, thus sim plifying the casting and the machin- ing process. The crankshaft 1s unusually large at the bearing diameters and is dynamically majanved) (0. Iakare smoothness of operation. The crank- shaft is drilled with oll leads and a high pressure oll system is used, sup- plying oil to all main bearings and connecting rods, The bearings are of unusually large proportions, and an extra bearing is provided at the e: treme front end of the shaft to sup- port a small balancing flywheel which eliminates all vibration and smoothes the motor out at any speed. ‘The connecting rods are made of a very light section drop forging with a heavy babbitt liner at the large end, ‘and a special process of grinding the| small end is used to insure absolute alignment of the connecting rods. The process was never used In engine building until it was developed by several manufacturers in grinding connecting rods of aeroplane engines. The perfect alignment which Is ob- tained by this process means the elimination of side friction of the pis- ton, which in turn insures an easier jand smoother running motor, and will - THE EVENING WORLD, WEDNESDAY, Se a TEE Lr made by @ patented moulding pro- cess and have an unusually long skirt and are extromely Nght in weight The front end drive is by silent chain running over three sprockets; one on the crankshaft, one on the camshaft, and the other on the gen~ erator and water pump shaft, The ignition distributor |s placed on top of the cylinder head, and is driven by the same gear which drives the oll pump, placing the ignition device away from oll and water. A Rickenbacker inverted cone clutch with a Raybestos facing run- ning in a bath of oil is used. The possibilities of burning the cluteh are eliminated and smooth action is in- sured. The clutch will not grab un- der jany condition. Al transmission brake is used at the rear end of the transmission for emergency purposes and is very ef- fective. Aluminum is used in t transmission case as well as the fly wheel housing, to eliminate weight. Another remarkable feature of the car is the extremely deep and wide section of the frame channels which insurea absolute rigidity and prac- tically eliminates all weaving. ‘The front and rear springs are un- usually long for 2 car of this size and weight. A special shackling arrange- ment upon the rear springs insures comfort in riding that has never be- fore been experienced in any car under 120-in, wheelbase. One can negotiate the roughest roads at a speed of forty to fifty miles per hour with no discomfort to the passengers. pasadena lt Te COLE DEMONSTRATING POLICY ‘S$ UNIQUE “The Cole system of demonstration is fundamentally different,” says J. H. MoDuffee, Assistant General Manager of the Cole Motor Car Company. “We assume that practically every mgn or woman interested in learning -nore about Cole motor cars has had ex- perience in handling cars and knows how to drive. “Furthermore, we credit the ex- perienced user with knowing the feel and the character.stics of a motor car the moment he gets his hands on the wheel. “That being the case, we regard our sales problem as being very simple. We say to the prospect— Drive the car—put it through its paces—take {t where the nature of the road will bring out its true worth in compari with other cars you have known. ooo LIVING UP TO A GUARANTEE IS EASY. ‘All guarantees are easy for the com- pany giving the guarantec to live up to, but some companies’ fuarantees are mighty hard on the consumer,” {s the Gaim of Thos Lavier jr, President of the Ray Battery Company of Ypsilanti, Michigan, This company gives an absolutely honafide guarantee with no adjustment so Mr, p to and back enough and rear theft lock, boots for the|have a great deal to do with the|<iauses and covering @ two-year period. protection of springs, Moore multiple (elimination of scoring, which ‘s 80|fuvjer sistos, is ease to hive t exhaust system, Lex!-gasifier, two-| frequently caused by the popr align-|tis company does not ¢! my head Ismps, cable service brake, |ment of the connecting rods. batteries for repairs to keep (ie repair and “one-finger” emergency brake. C, Howard, Vico President of the La Wayette Motors Company of Indianapolis. “Im the first place, the answer to this question is not of prime import to the man who can afford to demand maximum comfort and superior performance; secondly, motorists of this class have learned that true economy in motor car oper- ton does not begin at the gasoline tank. “Gasoline mileage depends so much on operating conditions and the habits of the individual driver that we make no definite claims. More- over, we are afraid that if we stated that the La Fayette, an eight- cylinder car of 100-horso power and 182-inch wheelbase, is giving from ten to twelve miles per gallon, car owners would be inclined to discount our statements for enthusiasm. But that is the average experience of our owners, most of whom claim to get ten miles per gallon in city driving | and twelve or more In the country. “Ponular opinion takes into reckon- | ing little except the carburetor In any consideration of fuel economy, | 1a- Fayotto engineera, howover, havo pointed out several other factors which vitally affect gusoline consump- tion. La Mayette’s excellent gasoline mileage records uro gained not only by aclentific carburetion, mantfolding and distribution of gas, but by high eMiciency of power transmission and the unusual lightness of the entire car, “All In all, it Is our belief that the records etsablished by La Fayette owners prove conclusively that econ- omy in gasoline can be attained by careful engineering of power trans- mission as well as the engine. —ipinianinens MANY OWNERS BACK CLAIMS OF ECONOMY Chalmers Officials Surprised at Owners’ Readiness to Co-operate. R. C. Refohel, Service Manager for the Maxweli-Chaimers Companies, declares that the low maintenance cost of the Chalmers had been the principal factor in bullding up the remarkably enthual- astic good will of Chalmers owners. “Recently we conducted a ci ign uring the slogan ‘Get the ruth out the Chalmers,’ We claimed that npalmera owners were practically unanimous saying !t was the best performing the lowest cost operat- tng car they had ever driven.
