The blaze w of little consequence, but it drew large crowds from Riverside Drive, Broadway, cross ttreets and the Ansonia Hotel and other big structures in the neighbor- hood. Joseph McGuire, telephone ope tor, saw smoke, and after sending in an alarm telephoned the forty fami- Mes Hving in the five-story pullding. Soon more than one hundred of them came trooping down the stairs with fur wraps over their nightclotres, many carrying jewel boxes and pets. There is no elevator In the building. Policemer Henry Singer and Will- iam Armstrong went through the Duilding and aroused the few who had not answered the telephone, and assisted them to the street. A second farm brought “Smoky Joe* Martin and several of the honorary deputy chiefs who live in the neighborhood. Miss Jane Ward, who lives on the second floor of the Loring lost a two-karat diamond ring, a pearl and coral necklace and an onyx and dia- mond ring. In the excitement Miss Ward grabbed her jewels and her canary birds and hurried to the Berkley Hotel. Later she returned to her rooms, She said she thought she must have dropped the jewels in the street. Their value, she said, she did not know as they were pres- ents. ‘ | The fire did Uttle damage except | to what the tenants called “rubbish” | in the cellar, The building Is being remodelled for stores on the ground floor. There was great indignation among some of the tenants, who de- clared the cellar was fairly choked with rubbish, and they had several times complained of it. It was even piled on the gas meters, they said. ‘Among the tenants, who held a sort of indignation meeting in the lower hallway after the smoke had cleared away, was 4 man describing himself as Special Assistant District At- torney Arthur King, who sald he would see if “something couldn't be done about It." Severa: times thero came near be- ing a fight between various tenants and a man describing himself as Paul H. Zagat, President of the con- cern that owns the building, and be- tween firemen and Zagat, When the crowd drawn to the scene saw there was going to be neither a fire nor a fight, it disappeared, 3dward Gilmartin of Engine Com- pany No 66 fell through a vault light ‘on the Broadway side.
