IN THE REALM OF MUSIC agner’s “Tristan und Isolde” Is Sung'in German at the Metropolitan. By Frank H. Warren. Mr. Gatt!-Casazza last season open- 4 his third opera week with “Tristan nd Isolda.”” The impresario last eve- ping began his third week of the present season with “Tristan und Fleolde,” the change in spelling indi- cating that the English translation ft last year has been cast aside and that Wagner's immortal love poem resumes its own language dress on the Metropolitan boards. And, in ite the change, the main body of the cast was the same as last year's. Mr. Sembach was Tristan, Mr. Blass hcing Mark, Mme. Matzenauer Isolde, ir, Whitehill Kurneval, and Jeanne Gordon Brangaene. To complete it, Mr. Leonhardt was Melot, George Meader a shepherd, Louis D'Angelo the steersman dnd Angelo Bada a sailor’s voice. It was not evident that ihe text was much more intelligible than when sung in English. Messrs. Whitehill and Blass were the most distinct, Mr. Sembach’s words could be heard when the music permitted, and Mme. Matz- enauer, at times, might have been em- ploying any language she hit upon. But this detail is trivial in the privi- lege of being able to enjoy Wagner's work, If one doesn’t fancy the sing- ing the orchestra is always there on its pulsing, throbbing journey, ready to carry the listener to heights where poor diction, and waving arms ana flat notes, and shrill tones cannot find a footing. For Mr, bach in the second act had trou! ith the pitch and Mme. Matzenauer met unassail- able notes. Their great love for duet ‘was, vocally, strangely lac melting tenderness and in expression. The climax sce! ly artificial. Conductor Bodanzky had his or- chestra working smoothly and, as a. rule, produced a nice working balance with the voices. Occasionally, how- ever, he asked too much of the singers. Joseph Urban's new scenic outfit of last season was wu: It might be asked why, in the den scene, the flooding moonlight reached only the two lovers and failed to find King Mark and his associates who were right on its path? And whence the pink lighss behind them? A new member of the song recital choir is Margot Samoran who, notwithstanding the F tinge, is an American girl and, Jooks, one of that numerous band of which sister nations are curious. Miss Samoranya appeared in Acolian Hall offering a “different” programme and had the expert support of Frank La Forge as accompanist. With this setting all would have been plain sailing had the young soprano Deen equal to the occasion, but her small voice, agreeable in timbre, is too pinched and colorless to make an en- tire programme effective. An aria from Gluck’s “Iphigenie en Touride,” one from “Marriage of Figaro,” Rus- sian numbers, and a group of Greek | melodies by Ravel were some of her eclections. Royal Dadmun, a baritone, and a| singer of experience in oratorio ana other fields, gave a recital in Town Hail, Mr. Dadmun's concert was first’ class entertainment. His voice is pleasing, resonant, easily _pro- duced, of good range, if not of too gencrous volume, and he used it with skill and discretion, The stamp of the oratorio singer is too frequently felt, perhaps, but the artist's nice taste and his means of expression lend the: proper variety to his pro- He can be seriv as he proved in his German BrOUr d, in turn, light, as shown in Mr Bur leigh’s negro arrangements of the negro numbers. Feodor Chaliapin, the Russian bass, wil! be heard in the title role of his compatriot’s opera, “Boris Godu- noft”—a role with which he has ap- peared fo many years in Europe with notable success. Yesterday General Manager Gatti-Casazza, who was the first to induce Chaliapin to sing out- side of Russia, when he engaged him for the Scala Opera of Milan over twenty ago, announced his ap- pearance as Boris at the Metropolitan on Friday evening, Dec. 9. ‘The sea- son's first “Parsifal” will be given on the afternoon of the same day (Fri- day, Dec, 9) beginning at_1 o'clock, with Mmes.
