TODR. LORENZ BY SCORES FOR HELP access More Than 70 Cases Ready for Him at First Clinic To-Day. Dr. Adolph Lorenz, the noted Aus- trian surgeen, was forced almost to push his way through parents with crippled children this morning when he held his first clinic in this city at the Hospital for Joint Diseases, Madi- fon Avenue and 1284 Street. More than « half a hundred patients were ‘on the ground floor, while upstairs in the clinic were twenty of the sufferers who were the first to come. These had been prepared for exam- ination, each in separate booth. ‘With every patient was a brief history of the case, including the cause of the injury, age, treatment heretofore, re- sponse to it and any other information it was considered necessary for Dr. Lorenz to have. In his handling of these cases he was assisted by Dre. Joseph G. Wishner and Walter I. Gal- Jand, specialists. The first case was that of a girl now twenty-one, who was injured when four years old, her hip being dislocated, her right leg shorter by several inches, She is now suffering from tuberculosis of the hip. Dr. Lomenz advised a special brace to immobolize the joint. Case number two was that of an- other young woman, the same age, whose right knee was broken when she was five years old. For four years she. wore a brace. The leg is shorter than the other and she suf- fers from weakness and instability. A brace to stiffen the knee and ele- vated shoe to overcome the shorten- ing were recommended. A girl victim of infantile paralysis, who had undergone several operations {mn the hospital and who Is now twelve years old, was next examined. Dr. Loreng concurred in the treatment of the case. A child of three injured at birth was the fourth case, The infant has since suffered from convulsions and a stiff paralysis of all muscles. The surgeon “dvised a lengthening of all contract- ed muscles and keeping them in an over-corrected condition In a plaster cast. A man of thirty, sufferer for twenty- five years with his hip, who had un- dergone several operations for ab- scesses, and whose leg is three inches short, was next examined. The ad- vice given was a dislocation of the femur against the side of the pelvis to exclude weight from the joint. In the case of a girl of eleven years, who received an injury of the spine at the age of ten months, which pro- duced paralysis of the bladder and both legs and who is suffering from muscular contraction, It was decided to stretch the muscles and place her tn a plaster cast. It was announcéd that Dr. Lorenz will examine patients from 9 to 12 A. M. every morning until further notice, Sundays and holidays excepted, and will see all who apply without regard to race, creed, color or financial con- dition, His first operation will be on Fri- day at 8 A. M, and he will begin op- erations every morning at 8 o'clock. While no authoritative statement has been made, it is belleved that cases of dislocation of the hip that cannot be treated by the ofd Lorenz method as was employed in the case of Lo- lita Armour, a machine will be ubed. This invention for the surgeon is said to make possible manipulation of muscle and bone where the strength of the surgeon's fingers are not euf- ficient. While the hospital at present has only thirty-five heds «available for cases that must vemain in the insti- tution it is said others will be found if necessary. eee 4 REDS DEPORTED TO RUSSIA BY U.S. Radicals Had Served Sentences for Obstructionist Campaign During War. When the Esthonia of the Baltic- American line, sails from New York this afternoon for Libau, Russia, she will carry four deportees whose names figured conspicuously among the radicals who tried to interfere with America’s activities in the war. Thuy are Mollie Steimer, Jacob Abrams, Hyman Lachowsky and Samuel Lip- man, Abrams will be accompanied by his wife, The four were convicted in 1918 and sentenced to long prison terms, which were to be followed by deportation. Harry Weinberger, counsel for the de- portees, made a bitter statement in which he said they were being sent to “a land of hunger and disease” for the “crime of holding honest opinions.” The United States, he said, “will com mit this vile act to-day and celebrate | ‘Thanksgiving to-morrow." Those Whe Are so Fortunate as to Have the “Day or Two” Slated Over Thanks- giving Will Find Plenty of Holiday Cheer at the New York Hotels. By Roger Batchelder. For many families, Grandma's table has given place to the dining room of a New York hotel, and this is the reason given by George 8. Burrell of the Commodore. “Within easy striking distance of New York,” he explained, “there are a score of large colleges, a hundred boarding schools, and any number of girls’ finishing schoom. The students, of course, cannot make the trip home for Thanksgiving if they live far away, and in order to have the family circle complete at the time of the feast, many parents come to New York with the children and are Joined here by the students. “To-morrow and Christmas are the only days when we do not see travel- ling men in New York. The great majority have arranged their routes, or applied for a three-day vacation, so that they can be at home and re- move the drumsticks for their young- sters. To them, Thanksgiving is a great event.” But not every one cats turkey on Thanksgiving, according to Oscar of the Waldorf. “We figure that about 70 per cent. of the ‘New Yorkers for a day or two’ will call for His Majesty,” he said. “I have no idea why the remainder are content with less traditional food.” Appetites will be good to-morrow. Oscar has just purchased six tons of turkeys for the five Boomer hotels, and Chef Leony of the Commodore has made 100 gallons of cranberry sauce. Mince and pumpkin pies— ordinarily not in great demand—will come into their own. and it has been estimated that if all the turkeys which the visitors will consume were: placed in Bryant Park their unani- mous gobble could be heard some where east of Cos Cob, Many of the phi EA ——_ Ash tar * Horlicks The ORIGINAL Malted Milk ‘The “Food- Drink” for All Ages.
