THE EVENING WORLD, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1921. PENN STATE'S GREAT COACH LEARNED FOOTBALL FROM. STAGG By Charlie Brickley. (Harvard's Famous Captain and All-American Back of 1912-13-14.) UGO BEZDEK, the celebrated coach of the Penn State footba?l team, is an example of what America offers as a land of opportunity for a poor boy with ambition, courage and perseverance working his way to the top. Hugo came to America from Czecho-Slovakia when quite young, making his early home in Cleveland, 0. A strong, rugged physique, plus a sharp intellect, were the only assets he possessed for his upward march to fame in his adopted country. Thrown into the public schools of Cleveland, and jater in Chicago, he bubbled out of the melting pot an “American” boy, with the American idea to excel in something. Nature gave him powerful muscles and an agile brain. He capitalized these assets. Hugo went to Lake High School in Chicago and dreamed of a college degree. Bezdek matriculated at the Un!-¢————#————————— versity of Chicago and became one] tion of Penn State, to retell! of Coach Amos Alonzo Stage’s great-| ind basketball, but lett in the spring eat football stars.
